Hi
I am reading an article suggested earlier.
http://webworkshop.net/search-engine...on-basics.html

Trying to up the PR and looking at popular search terms to place on the page.
If a popular search term was e.g. Study German, and say I had several different pages - Study German online - Study German at Home and Study German at training centre.

Would it be better to make each of the 'Study German' words the Text link, so the search engine sees multiple ref of Study German on the home page, each relating to different wepages. or would it think the multiple use of Study German as text links are spam.

Hope this makes sense

Dave

I would try to get the "anchor text" of each link as the keyword phrase you are promoting. This alone will get you to the top if you get enough incoming links. See Google Bomb
Example of a Google Bomb Notice Georgie's bio is number 1.

However, this is a sneaky tactic that should never be used. I am almost certain this could get your site banned if the incoming anchor text has nothing to do with the content on the landing page.

The best way to increase rankings is 3 fold:
- Have good content that is constantly being updated.
- Link building with good sites with content that your visitors might be interested in.
- Keyword placement in content of individual pages, and anchor text of incoming links.

Beware of shady link exchanges. Many people (including our dear sherkhan) like to put backlinks on pages visitors would never find. Meaning, the page is not linked from the main page, or from any other pages a visitor might actually visit. These kinds of exchanges only let your site bleed visitors. Very shady tactic.

you may have "Study German online" , "Study German at Home" and "Study German at training centre" as your keywords and as anchor text.
but you shouldn't make only "study german" as anchor text many times. this might be considered as search engine spam

Not any more. Google killed Google Bombs. But you posted this a loooong time ago; I'm not sure why this thread has been bumped?

No way! If that were true, you could get your competition banned by making a bunch of spammy links on Wikipedia and Craigslist. Because you have no control over who links to you or how, you won't be punished for this.

I think it would work well if you use a different variations of German and study. German study, study with Germans, I like German study. search engines know when you use the same keywords over and over again this will only hurt you. so try to make them vary some what and you'll be fine.

The importance of the link text in your hyperlinks:

  • Always use your primary keywords in the visible link tag area of at least one or more links on the page.
  • Try to place your primary keywords at the start of the link when possible.
  • If generating or creating a "doorway" page, always link to another page on your site which includes more detail about the keyword topic.
  • Avoid listing the same word multiple times in a row since some engines may penalize for this. Instead, use the keyword multiple times, but separate them by other words in your text.
  • Use the longer form and the plural form of a keyword when possible. For example, if you use marketing in your Title tag, a search on marketing or market will yield a match on most engines. However, words like companies will not always yield a match on company since company is not an exact "substring" of companies. In these cases you'll want to try and use both forms of the word.
  • Use Upper/Lower case lettering for keywords in general. Example: Blue Widgets are sold here!
