My first comment concerning the design, is I think you should put some more string color on the home page. If you go to the login page or Member List, you use more red and there is more contrast. I think it's nicer.
Why not making a different banner on each page to make the site more attractive ?
In your menu, you are using only short categories except for that one:
Log in to check your private messages
Can't you put something shorter? It's look a bit strange to me.
On the top of you rpage, you have some google's links followed by Google search. Can't you try to put all in one row? It will bring the page your page a bit upper.
Also, your website is running quite fastly on my computer... (G4 - OSX - Firefox)
