Agreed, for a first site - nicely done.
Now, take it to the next step and do it w/o tables for layout and CSS
The only place that a table is fine is your products page.

I'm down with it. It's very furry! And I like the little cartoon dog.
The text resizes. Way cool.
Consistent navigation. Way cool.
Clean pictures. Way cool.
The major non-SEO design issue you'll have is the width of your site. It's too wide for users with resolutions set at 800x600.
Now...as far as your SEO is concerned, I'm going to give you what will probably be the single best piece of advice you'll ever get.
Good SEO is an extension of good web design, and not an independent component.
What does that mean?
It means that if you're really going to build a successful site, your SEO will come as the result of your own organic efforts to improve it, tweak it, add to it and build for your users. If you worry about your users at every point, your SEO will improve by extension.
So...with that in mind, let's look at some of the things you can do to SEO your site.
1) The big one. <h> tags. Right now, you're using graphic headers, whereas using <h1> tags will allow you to describe the page and what it's about. If you're smart, you'll figure out how to incorporate a keyword or two tastefully in there (again, remember your end user.
2) Alt attributes for your images. This is important because it helps your users who may be visually impaired figure out what's going on with the image, and search engines (who are image-impaired) figure out what the image is supposed to be.
You'd be surprised at how many people do image searches, and how often a well-designed site receives search engine referrals from their images.
3) Use the title tag to describe what each page is about, using the rule from the <h> tag. This will have an especially great benefit for your product pages, because some people will be very specific about that sort of thing (again, you'd be surprised).
That's about all I can think of.

Only 1 comment on the use of Alt attributes on your images. If it is a 'fluff' graphic, meaning it's only for decoration, then it's ok to put in blank alt - alt="".
If it's important to your site, then don't just say alt="photo of dog", DESCRIBE it, at least to some degree.

Good site and very easy to navigate. It also has every thing you need. The only bit I don't like is the embossed logo on the main page. Being a Graphic Designer I would say never emboss type, Its one of main rules of design. It makes the site looks simple which it is'nt.

For a first website, very nice. One suggestion. Put alot of pics of real dogs, cats etc. on the pages, maybe even an auto pic updater. pet owners love pictures of pets.

Impressive for a first site. It is easy to navigate about and all the relevant information that is needed is easily accessible. I like the colour scheme and I think the use of cartoons is effective for that kind of site. You also include a map to help visitor find your shop, which I think is a nice touch.
How about using some images of real animals to offset the cartoons?
The opening log could also do with looking a bit more professional.
Overall, good stuff!

I thought the siite was fun and cool in particular: I liked the game section .
Some suggestions:
lose the intro "enter page"
I think the only part of the site that needs a revamp looks wise is where you are displaying your products, something just doesnt work.
Also I believe you are displaying your table borders without CSS, which makes them differently in firefox, netscape, than it does in IE.
I would check out your site with other browsers-- if th difference in looks bothers you can apply CSS border on the table.

I like the general layout of the site.
Here are 3 things I think you should atleast do for SEO:
1) Make your title more informative. (For each different page, tell what page you are on.. not just "Petwise". For exampe... "Contact Page - Petwise - Your source for blah blah blah and some more blah" .
2) Add meta tags, for example, description, keywords, auther, etc.
3) add alt tags to all of your pictures describing what the picture is.
Good just for your first site though, good luck.

Think you should remove the doorway-page.
Maybe you could try using a colored background instead of the white. Not sure if it'll work out, just a suggestion.
Site looks nice.

Glad you brought this up, when I label my images with alt tags I should use text for what the image is, correct? Not just use my keywords. Hope this make sense.

First of all, your website takes time to load. maybe you should consider that, because not all users uses dsl/broadband. lots of users uses only dial-up connection.
*aside from placing images of your petshop, you might as well put images of live animals.
*try using hover effects on your navigation.
*as what i am always advising, try to put some moving images like gifs or flash to attract more visitors
else;
your website is pretty nice!
