I am new to html/web design. My wife wanted me to build a website, so we could communicate and share pictures with family. Could someone give me some feedback or suggestions on my site?

www.timandcarla.com

Thanks!

the flash intro is creative and you can tell you spent a great deal of time on it! - but the main site definitely doesnt match up to it - it could use color - and maybe a different graphic at the top... also if you mainly want to share photos there are some good php scripts you can find -

http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Script...ies/index.html - there are a bunch of good free ones -

i use coppermine... http://www.ezdzns.com/mina/gallery - i just downloaded one of their templates and changed the top image - yet i plan to configure the whole layout - it's template based so you can design your own template... it's pretty flexible - and you should be able to integrate it into your site if you know basic html and php... what's nice also is that people can vote on them and add comments - and you upload from the browser... let me know if you need any help!! Good luck!

Skipped the intro, it scared the crap out of me. Crazy music and whatnot.

http://www.timandcarla.com/images/bottomrounder.gif (Bottom left) not available!

Page lacks color. Top banner is kind of weak, but more importantly it is a random blue rectangle on your white page. There is also a random white rectangle below the huskers link.

You want some consistant color theme. You will notice these forums are all a pretty blue. I don't care if your site is consistantly purple/brown.. at least it is consistant

The intro IMHO needs scrapping, the site has a home made feel about it, it is far from the best site out there, but simple sites can work very well, I would add more colour, maybe design a nice header using your sir name as the theme, alittle more content on the first page would be nice, take the deisgn by to the base of the site and play around with fonts instead of standard, well done and good luck.

Hey, I realize you're not a pro web designer, but these people are. They will insult that site as long as this post stays on the forum. Don't listen to the critisizm if you don't think it's right, because it's your family site, and it should look like it was made by you. You just need to learn a bit more than HTML. Thats all. Here's a good tutorial site for graphics and other tutorials:

http://www.tutorials4you.com/

That's basically where I started out. It's really helpful. Just go there, and learn anything you please for free. I think you just need a bit more experience, but it's great that you're getting your feet wet, because web design has opened worlds for me. I'm getting paid "Kudos" by doing MY family's website :P Just keep going, and gain some knowledge of the web. Another good book I like is:

Creating Web Pages for Dummies

This is one of the notorious "For Dummies" books. The chapters include:

*Web Page Basics
*HTML
*Frontpage 2003
*Dreamweaver MX 2004
*Multimedia
*JavaScript (really cool)
*Flash MX 2004
*E-Commerce
*XML

You might not know what half of these things are, but in a couple of years, you are bound to start using them. I advise going through the first 2 chapters, then consider buying

Microsoft Frontpage 2003

It's a really easy program for web designers. Professionals use it, as well as amatuers, and it's sold almost anywhere they sell software. It has templates, and if you want, you can start from scratch.

The Dummies Book that I mentioned sells for around $35.00....a great price for what you're getting. But don't take my word for it....go buy a copy from a local book store.

I hope I have been of help....keep trying....and good luck!.

It looks like the site will serve your purpose well. Not bad for a first attempt! I hate the intro page though. Nothing against yours, I just don't like any of them...

I would:

create a banner that stretches the full length of the page.
Add more color (match the intro color scheme)
finish the other pages (add your banner to em etc.
See how things look and go from there.

for starters

Having made several of my own home pages, I can honestly say I disliked the flash page...I skipped it as well.

And using a wysiwyg editor is NOT needed. YOU can hand code. IF you want to use a wysiwyg, please, please, PLEASE do NOT use Front Page. It bloats the code on the page and download times are horrendous. Use one of the others like 1st Page 2000.

We discussed free wysiwyg editors in this thread: http://www.webmaster-talk.com/showthread.php?t=14666

And we have this thread going about the difference between dreamweaver and handcoding: http://www.webmaster-talk.com/showthread.php?t=18964

I agree about the top banner, it needs to stretch across the entire page. I was viewing your page source and trying to figure out how you did the banner but couldn't and I see that you did use FP to generate this web site. Liz

I don't like the Font you are using, can't explain why, think I am allergic to it
The intro was okay, except for a littlebit annoying music, but wxcept from that it works well!
The links page doesn't work, so that should probably been fixed, and the site could, as mentioned earlier use some colors!

Tim,

For a first effort, I think it is a good effort. Flash intros have gone the way of the dodo (a bit), but overall you are on your way. Clearly you spent a lot of time on the site and you seem to have a desire to learn more -- building more web sites and reading a design book will go a long way to better your skills. Don't worry about the adamant criticism you receive -- read it and learn from it, but don't take it to heart. Your first site is a LOT better than my first one was!

Functionally, your site worked well. The only issue I ran into was when I was looking at your Chicago picture thumbnails, I had no way to get back to the main pages of your site.

Good job and keep at it -- with practice your design skills will continue to develop.
