Hi, I like the design of http://www.lawsloop.com/index4.php. Like the use of white space and graphics - and it is somehow cleaner.

Ok, to clarify, we are now discussing this (http://www.webmaster-talk.com/900623-post20.html) post. Not any before them.

I think what you mean is some people are willing to do that.

Do you have any meaningful stats on how many people couldn't be bothered?
I suggest you learn what the words "Mystery Meat Navigation" really means.

If you need a block of text to explain the purpose of your site, then you are really doing something wrong. Your site doesnt have a tag line.
I would start right there with adding one that "nails" the concept.

Yes, you are right there are plenty of big companies that succeed with obscure sounding names. They also have big advertising budgets. Do you?

Ah, yes... good old WebPagesThatSuck. That should be a required read for anyone who designs websites.

And the Mystery-meat navigation for the articles, etc... get rid of it. Period.

Think about it this way:
You have icons on your desktop. All the icons look the same, and you don't know what icon is for what until you mouseover it. Horribly inefficient and a big waste of your time.

It's fine to have all your icons look the same, they just need some text along with them.

Your users will be much happier. Not to mention that you would have GREATLY improved your website's accessibility. (I can't hardly use the bottom half of your site with my phone.)

HTH,
-Trey

Taking today as a case study, skimming over the records, I'd say about 80-85% of people clicked a second link or more. Most of the time they were the text link pages and forum threads near the top but the page icons were clicked too, estimating about 30% of second clicks. I had read about Mystery Meat Navigation, however in both vids on the site, they tend to be essential to the navigation, whereas mine aren't and there are plenty of other avenues to go down.
Either way, I've made another page which shows the page title below and seriously, it doesn't work with the character differences: http://www.lawsloop.com/index_again_edit.php
Obviously I'm open to other ways of showing the info but I can't really think of a better way to show it, hence Website Review and Suggestions (I've taken on most of the suggestions given in this thread). It just doesn't seem to be a major problem because people still wander the site with those apparently unforgivable atrocities on the homepage anyway.

I'm shocked the top half of the site works on your phone, let alone the bottom.

I doubt they started with a huge advertising budget but for the sake of argument, I'll just say I have a huge advertising budget, absolutely colossal. Unfortunately they won't give any cash to the site design department though. Its a shame - but oh well, back on topic!

What looks better, the separated boxes of http://www.lawsloop.com/index_again1.php or the gradient of http://www.lawsloop.com/index_again.php?

I would definitely agree as well, the new one has too many effects and is too crowded, and big. The old one is nice and simple and spaced out well.

Ok, I've added a note to index4.php that says we have moved on from that page and I'm now asking about which is better.

I like the current page that you are using. It gives the user an option to write a new article right from the homepage that is easy to see. When a user comes to your website the first thing they see is that "I want to write a page about…" section. If you are looking to keep current and new users active I would suggest keeping it the way it is. Looks great to me.

index_again.php also looks good to me.

I like the current page better. index_again.php also looks very good. It is a matter of whichever you like better I suppose. Just be sure to keep that section on the front page for people to be able to post articles.

I like the second one better, I think that it needs that space in between the sections. It looked to crowded on the first one.

Thanks you three, even if all the answers are different!

I decided I did want the 'Welcome' information blurb in it so I edited the Homepage a little more. Clicking the Eye icon will give a preview of the page content.

http://www.lawsloop.com/index_again_again.php
The left hand side is all in one bit, it goes light grey - dark grey - light grey.

http://www.lawsloop.com/index_again_again2.php
The left hand side is all in one bit again but this time it goes dark grey - light grey - dark grey.

Based on Leopard's advice about separating the two halves, I also made
http://www.lawsloop.com/index_again_again3.php

I can't decide which colour scheme is better for the first 2. On those ones I also added a bit more space between the 2 halves but didn't make them into two separate sections. I think I very slightly prefer the first one.

Out of the three, I think I like the 1st and 3rd the most.

This is definitely the last time I ask for opinions because I've pushed it as it is making revision after revision but you guys have been a massive help.
