In the world of Graphic design trying to find a place in the business is hard to do, just as hard as a web designer. Competition is a wide area, and it isn't like any other normal job out there, and you must have your own style and to get noticed you really have to put yourself out there.
You need a strong portfolio with many different designs, and make sure you really put a lot of detail into some of your work, but don't go too overboard because most clients don't care about something that takes a lot of time to design. Also you need to have the knowledge of creating themes, creativity is what most agencies look for, pick subject matters from around the world, and then create those themes, and capture the attention of the people that are going to view the work. You want someone to look at the design and have knowledge of what it represents, and can walk away with that image captured in their mind.
Once you have built a strong portfolio your next step is submission, to many different agencies around the country. You mentioned that you are living in California, which is one of the hardest areas of the country to break into, mainly because there are thousands upon thousands of artist out there already and this goes for New York as well. You have to capture the eyes of these people, because they review so many up and coming graphic artist daily, so to get noticed be very creative, and use your own style, someone is going to notice, it just takes time.
Good Luck
