I really don’t get CMS but I am starting a new web page and have heard they make web page design much quicker and faster. However I don’t want a forum or build community. I simple want to be able have a template or directory style list at side and use the software to add a new page, then have the site directory or navigation update and the new page added. More of a page builder type thing than build a community. I found these offered by no idea what to use. I have looked at the web page for these software but they all look like communities and not something to run web page. I would not mind people being able to rate web page but not needed. Any input would be greatly appreciative.

Please help an old women understand !!!

I found:

cPanel::CMS::E107
cPanel::CMS::Geeklog
cPanel::CMS::Mambo
cPanel::CMS::Nucleus
cPanel::CMS::PostNuke
cPanel::CMS::Xoops
cPanel::CMS: hpWiki

and two blogs but I don’t think a blog is what I want.

cPanel::Blogs::B2Evolution
cPanel::Blogs::WordPress

Thank you for any help

WordPress is, essentially, a content management system, it doesn't necessarily have to BE a blog in the strict sense.

CMS = content management system. Could be anything and certainly does NOT have to be a "community" or forum, they just happen to be all the rage right now. Look at Joomla or BigMedia.

travelagent I don't think Kimberly is looking to start a directory. If I'm understanding right she's looking for a list of links in a sidebar and to have the list update when each new page is added.

Kimberly like LadynRed mentioned blog software like B2Evolution and WordPress really are content management systems. They just happen to be a specific type of CMS.

I think WordPress is very easy to use. There are a lot of free themes available for it so you don't have to live with the default look. The hard part is you may not find a theme that does exactly what you want. In that sense what travelagent said is right because if you're not familiar with CSS and PHP you could get lost trying to make changes to the template.

If I'm understanding though what you want isn't hard to do. I use WordPress to run my blog and I created a sitemap for it which is just a list of the titles of every post.

Here's the sitemap page.

Every time I publish a new post that list is automatically updated. It was only a few lines of code to create that list and it could just as easily have been in a sidebar.

You can see that it can get out of control pretty fast if you add a lot of pages. I think it's already a little too much for my one page.

There are other ways you can set things up, but again it helps to understand how WordPress is put together to make some changes. The other option is to hire someone familiar with WordPress to customize it for you. If you can find a free theme you like that's close and doesn't require a lot of work to tweak for your needs it probably wouldn't cost much.

I would recommend WordPress though since it is pretty easy to use. Once you get used to it it's simple to add new pages and there's a strong development community around it offering free plugins to extend what the basic software can do.

One of the things about WordPress is that it is actually possible to use it for the creation of an entire site, since WordPress can create additional non-blog pages. Unfortunately, the site that I've seen the owner build with WordPress is down right now but it is definitely possible.

However... you aren't going to find something that will work for you without some form of customization. You might want to move the sidebar to the left instead of the right; you might want to change the width of your layout; you may want to only show certain pages/posts/pieces of information. This is where you're likely to struggle.

Personally, if you're creating a new site and don't have a lot of experience, I would recommend against using "CMS software" unless you know someone or are willing to pay someone to help you customize it.

Trying to build a web directory can be an undaunting task also, if you've never attempted something like that ... I'm not trying to discourage you, but it sounds like you're trying to bite off more than you can chew at this time.
My web page has been online since 97 http://www.momsbreak.comand I know html freehand since that is all you had to make web page back then. I know a bit of php and I have installed a few scripts here and there.

However they had to be a easier why then building a web page using Frontpage and ftp. Frontpage leaves to many other unneeded codes.

I am simple do not have time to screw with another html web page when I know there is software out there to make web page design faster and easier.

I thank you for your input but my Moms Break is way to big and I need to branch out to get better targeting ads and affilate programs.

Kimberly
