How much to charge?

Ok, so I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this. I was thinking of the commerce forums, so move it there if it is more appropriate.

Anyway, myself and two other friends have a website that needs to be built from scratch for a customer.

The site for now will be pretty simple, in terms of structure. There will be some content pages with information about the company etc (about 4 pages). There will also be a photo gallery and video gallery (extra 2 pages).

For now we plan on making it a pure HTML/CSS site, with possibly a flash banner/graphic to liven it up. The site will need to be fairly "flashy" or "trendy", so will require some pretty extensive graphical work.

We don't have alot of experience in working for clients (especially together), so we have no clue what to charge... I've been trying to look for examples on the net, but had no luck yet. What do you guys think would be a reasonable price for what I have described above?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers.

That is totally up to you.
I'd discuss it with the customer first and then maybe post the results here.

If you offered me a flash site, I'd fire you and your buddies immediately!!!

Flash sites are a thing of the past; they're NOT indexed by the SE's (Search Engines) ... get a grip on reality; get up-to-speed on the current trends; and learn HTML and CSS!

If you are planning to design n develop in flash, your site will be late noticed by search engines, and the best option to get noticed is to make the site in HTML, CSS driven with minor flash used. It will come up on the search engines.

Im not trying to re write how to win friends and influence people but the guy said

If you are using HTML/CSS and it is a basic site I would not charge much. Maximum a few hundred. Once the client is happy with the work you can then negotiate future business with them. You have hinted at this already.

If you over charge them now they will look upon it as being ripped of and want to take their business some place else. Do you want to be finding new business every day or growing your relationship with those that you have?

Thanks. Yeah we've kinda come to the same conclusion.

And like I said, it's PURE HTML/CSS, and POSSIBLY some flash, but only for things like a banner, so don't get yer knickers in a knot guys... I'm not a big fan of flash in web-development myself, so don't worry

Thanks again.

(and yes, if he is happy with the work we will probably continue to work for him )

An hourly rate that you think is reasonable x number of hours you think it would take to complete the site = amount to charge customer.

Sum (time needed for each of the tasks you feel is necessary to complete the site) = number of hours you think it would take to complete the site.

I think I just created Algebrenglish.

A couple hundred bucks? I do updates for more than that? Completely build a site from scratch for that price?

If you can build a full blown site without tables that looks professional for 200 bucks. I'd like to hire you full time

The couple hundred dollar guys will eventually put themselves out of business.

one: Lets not forget we need to pay taxes on our earnings.

two : Phone calls replied emails all = $$ in my book.

three: At what point do you plan to get any return for the big $$ you spent on software to develop these sites?

At that price, you would get about 3.3 hours of work from me.

I reckon the best way is to add up all the hours each of you have spent on building the website and charge something like £10 per hour.

Write up an invoice which clearly outlines all the individual jobs you've completed and the hours you've spent on them. This way there's less chance of a dispute.

Extra things you've purchased to get the website up and running should be charged to the customer on the invoice under "additional costs" or something like that.

It should really depend on what your costumer is willing to spend.. If he/she is willing to spend a good hundred dollars for a really good website then you should make the website good for the price you're being payed.
