Question: throughout my college career I have said that I wanted to be a web designer. In the last several years the job descriptions have been narrowed down a little bit, but they are still not standardized from company to company. In the meantime, I've come to the realization that I'm not very good at visualizing something creative, and I hate to code. I like to take other people's creations/ideas and put them together in HTML or Flash. Would you call that a web builder? Are there many jobs out there that would call for this kind of 'building'?

i think the web's allready been built, we're just adding information. LOL.

you sound like a production artist or mebbe web developer? I honestly don't konw how much of a calling there is for a person as yourself. Mebbe working for some super arrogant designer who said "i'll create it; ye shall produce it" but i don't think david carson is hiring right now. LOL.

Ok, if you hate to code, then how do you take a design and put it into html or flash ? Flash requires some amount of actionscripting too - ie: "coding".

What you describe can certainly fall under the general umbrella of 'web designer". The title 'web designer' encompasses actual design as well as putting together the HTML, CSS, etc. to make a web page.

A 'web developer', in general, does the 'heavy lifting' - PHP, ASP, .NET, Cold Fusion - the back-end database, highly dynamic application stuff.

Oh.. and yes, there are people who ONLY take a Photoshop file and turn it into HTML. I've seen a few services that do only that and are charging anywhere from $75 to $180 PER PAGE to do it.

So you're not creative, and you hate to code.

Stupid question: why would you want anything to do with web design? I don't get that at all.

Honestly, I wouldn't see a lot of demand for anything you'd be offering. It seems to me that you're taking the laziest road possible: "you do all the real work of being creative, and thinking it out, and well...I'll make you a 5-10 page brochure site." If that's the case, you're destined to fall flat on your behind.

I should be more specific. When I say I hate to code I meant programming. I don't mind HTML and CSS, I have worked a little with Flash and Actionscript and I've built a few websites. I'm just trying to get a handle on the job titles in multimedia.

So you're a designer.

As it stands right now, you're part of a dime a dozen class. People who can build pages in HTML and CSS and a little Flash. What does that mean? It means that work will be relatively small in comparison to the workers.

How do you reverse that ratio? You set yourself apart. What are you going to do that's different? Designer/coder? That's out since you hate coding. Flash? See HTML/CSS. It's just another type of design. SEO? Possibility, but probably not likely since proper SEO does require certain aspects of coding.

Not a lot left (if anything) the way I see it. But you're going to have to figure out something unique.

Why go into a field that you weren't absolutely excited about? A career can last a VERY long time. Your setting yourself up for depression.

As far as a money goes, It depends on what level of living your looking for. I designed one site for a company, and they hired me full time to manage online related tasks. I'm not saying I make 6 digits but, with my full time position and my extras on the side I do quite well.

Don't get me wrong. School is a definite thing to have but too often I have seen people use it as a crutch thinking they will get immediate gains and don't apply themselves.

In my opinion, it's what you love, how you apply yourself and sell yourself that gets money in your bank account.

Sell yourself and be passionate about who you are and what you do. period.

Good Luck !
