I use Microsoft Front Page to build my site. I hope someone can help!

I really havent the faintest clue what I need to do to accomplish the following:

I have a form that I want to have results sent to a database, rather than email, which is how I have it set up now. How do I do that?! ASP pages? Then my webhost will need to support ASP and CGI which they do NOT!
Can I alternatively send the form results sent to Excel? If not, I will go ahead and change hosting services.

I also need to create a user name and password (can I do this just using scripts?) for each visitor of my site that will actually be able to view assignments, select them and (then the selection will no longer be available to others), then they can view their assignments and instructions, etc, and then they can use my forms to submit the results of their assigments.

How difficult does this sound to do? Can I do it using Front Page, Access or Publisher? I have all three but really havent used Access or Publisher.

I am creating all the information as I go here, so I really dont want to hire anyone to put it all together for me at this point. I was hoping to save costs in building this myself.

Thank you for ANY help!
Christina

From my quick look at the FP help file it appears that you need to be hosted on a windows server to keep it simple. FP doesn't play fair when on a linux box with just the extensions installed.

Why don't you open the FP help file and type "form to database" in the search box without the "".

Also "username password" without the "".

I have never done either of them. I would be happy to try and answer and questions you have about what the contents of the help files mean.

You are going to need several things. First of all, you're going to need to ditch Frontpage. I think it will probably do what you want it to, but it's impossible to maintenance in the future and not many people will be able to help you with troubleshooting as it's not a popular server-side coding editor. Dreamweaver is probably one of the most popular and does a lot of the redundant work for you.

You are also going to need a host who supports databases and some type of server side scripting language. Unfortunately, all I know is asp, access, and SQL. If you need some sample scripts in these languages, I would be happy to help.

Try hunting around for some tutorials sites, like www.webthang.co.uk

Anyway, good luck to you and let me know if you need help.

Thank you both for your advice. I will be sure to check out Dreamweaver and the website you suggested. I will have to keep researching this but will check back here when questions arise, I appreciate your offers to help.

Christina,

The easiest way to implement something like this is to use PHP and MySQl. Your host should offer these as a matter of course, so there will be no need to change servers.

If you would like some information about how I can help you (I am a PHP developer who understands that people have to start somewhere and therefore will not charge you a great deal!), please Skype(chat) me : mafiacooper : and I will be happy to help you out.

Regards,

Matt

Yes, you would definitely need to use a scripting language (ASP, PHP, Perl, etc...) and a database for what you want. I would recommend using PHP as I find it to be the simplest scripting language to use and it is also the most widely used.

I would suggest you to try using some free scripts to start with. hotscripts.com has plenty of free scripts.
