Hi People
I want to set up a paid site for a friend of mine who's a musician and wants to sell lessons on line (with video, mp3 etc)

First off, I have done web sites with AOL Press (years ago) and currently I use Frontpage. I did study some HTML coding years ago and am wondering if thats still the best way to do any web site that has to be passworded ...

I actually have many questions but here's a starting point ...

Thanks and any help would be appreciated

How do you use FrontPage for password protection. Well if it does, I use .htaccess and does FrontPage use the method?

htacess, is a unix file for apache? i believe.

Basically you can make file read, permissions, etc.

experts please dont dis me here, its not like chmod, but you can make it so that users cant read a certain folder, and to make it password protected, try search pixel2life.com for some tutorials on htacess.

regards

i have briefly used htaccess when i tried to host my site without having to get a server or a subscription....only to no avail

passwords with frontpage??? don't even try it...i mean, i'm not that good at web design when it comes to passwords and stuff but php or asp would be a hell of a lot easier and if you don't want to download or buy £300 worth of software, i'd advise Dreamweaver MX, it's very easy to use and isn't that confusing.

i'd advise ditching frontpage and going with dreamweaver and using a PHP server technology.

html is just a mark-up language for layout and viewing the page content. It can't really provide any programming solutions... You would really need to build the site in php, coldfusion, asp, etc. to provide a secure login and password protection. There are some really good tutorials available for someone to learn to build secure dynamic sites. zend tutorials is a good place to learn php.
I wouldn't necessarily try to take on a site that needs this kind of advanced coding if you're not comfortable with it.

.htaccess allows a directory on a site to be password protected. It might still work with FP extensions installed. Not sure it will do what you want in this case.

There are some really decent and inexpensive scripts out there written in php that will allow you to have multiple users each with their own password.

Post back a little more info and someone will know the answer.

You've got to learn some basic user authentication and form handling in PHP. There are custom applications for sale to provide such a functionality as the one you really request for, but if you have to do it yourself, then try to learn any of the numerous server languages. (I recommend PHP.)

Check out http://www.swanilda.com/ for tutorials on such.

But don't forget you need to ditch FP and start learning DW as soon as possible.

I wish you luck! Remember to post your progress and hitches!
