I don't think current templates are worth the price at all. Mainly because the templates are very often coded so poorly they make it difficult for even experienced developers to update easily.
I've never seen one that used valid code or was search engine friendly. On the surface templates seem like a good value since you can get a nice looking site inexpensively and quickly. There will come a time though when you are wanting to make updates or improve your search engine visibility and you'll find the template you have is hindering both.
Templates are often painfull slow to download since they rely very heavily on oversized graphics to get that pretty look.
Most templates seem to put all the effort into creating a flashy design and often one that while looking nice isn't beneficail to your business needs. Ususally they want to code them as fast as possible so they can begin selling them and use out of date coding practices.
I'm sure they're are some very good templates out there, but I have yet to come across them. I do think there will come a time when templates are coded better and will become a good value. I just don't think that's the case at the moment.
A quick story: About a year ago I set up a site for someone who decided to puchase a template. I spent time redoing the code to make the template download faster and make it easier to update and also just make a few changes the client wanted. I probably spent just as much time if not more than had I designed and developed the template from scratch. Within a week he had found another site in that same industry using the same template.
