What is the best way to have auto-refresh?

Is there a way to have your site auto refresh? Currently, I have a small pop-up that reminds my visitors to refresh. Is there a way for a basic HTML page to auto refesh?

its nonsense. it is not required. tell why u need an auto-refresh? i dont see any ideas for that!

Please don't be so utterly ridiculous - how on earth do you know whether or not he "needs" auto-refresh? There are many websites that may require auto-refresh, although many of which are slowly being replaced with AJAX, such as web-based email or webcams.

Mike, use the following meta tag in your <head> tag:

Code:

<META HTTP-EQUIV=Refresh CONTENT="10; URL=index.htm">

This will refresh the index.htm page after 10 seconds.

I believe you can also do it with Javascript - let me know if you need to

I heavily agree with Surfing7. Refreshing a page without letting your visitors know is not really top-of-the-line accesibility. Never surpise your visitors on a website.

I think it's a little bit of an assumption to make, that the refresh tag has absolutely no use whatsoever.

Whether it's "top-of-the-line accesibility" or not, or if you think it's "nonsense" is out of the question. The fact is, Mike wanted to know the code to do it, and I told him - it's that simple.

Harvey, thanks! I just want the page to refresh when a visitor comes back, not while he is on the site. Any ideas?

I am not sure what the big fuss is. I make a lot of changes on my front page and a few other HTML pages. If my visitors come back and don't refresh their page, they will not see the changes and think the site is dead. I had a bunch of people tell me, "I don't see the changes you made." I always say "refesh your browswer" and they say, "ah!"

I am pretty new to being a webmaster. I have 3 years experience running forums, but have been working on websites for the past year. Please help a newbie and let me know why a refresh code is wrong! I don't need an autorefresh while members are surfing the site, just a refresh when they return.

could you use

HTML Code:

<meta http-equiv="expires" content="0">

to stop the page caching? Each time the user returned to the page there would be no cache and the page would load from the server.

How is it nonsense? Suppose it was a news site or sports site that he was building that was updating often? Like a football match...90 mins...updating when there is a foul, card, goal, penalty etc. Because you don't use it doesn't mean it is useless. I'm pretty sure that you have something on your website if you have one that is deemed useless! However it is only useful depending on the type of website that you are working on.
