Hi All:

This is a question I have had for a long time, but just getting around to ask.

When I make websites, I usually do not attempt to accomodate 640x480 displays, I usually try to fit it in a 800x600 resolution.

My question is:

Should I rethink this and try to fit my sites within 640 pixels, or is there not enough people using such low resolution that I shouldn't worry?

check your web site stats. usually less than 2% of the visitors have a lower resolution than 800x600

Definately not worth it, Miguel. I would concentrate more on 800x600 for any website.

first check your stats, find out how many ppl are there in 640*480.

most of the designers concentrate on 800*600 cos it is widely used now

nowadays you will find many sites which are for 1024 also.

as the tech. develops so does this.
but eventually it depends on ur target audience.

if u target area is a third world country (no offense to any one), then you will find 800*600 very popular.

in europe and us, 1024 and 800 enjoy almost equal share.

on a side note, it would be a better idea to design a site which looks the same in both the resolution

cos u do not want to differentiate between the 2 user groups.

I just checked my stats and I have had 1 person using a resolution less than 800 x 600 96% use 800 X 600 or 1024 X 768

I'd say it really depends how much traffic you get, for example, if you just have a personal site getting about 100 hits a day with 2% of people using 640x480 those 14 people a week are not really worth changing your whole layout for, but on the other hand, if you have a business getting mabye 1000 hits a day, that's 140 people a week, many of those could be potential buyers, you could be missing out on alot of business.

Most monitors are larger now. A lot of computers come with a 15 or 17 in monitors. Myself I use 21 in monitors on two of my computers. 17 in and 19 in monitors are cheep to buy now. So I think more people use 600X800. I think the people using 640x480 are a very very small number.

My opinion on this is like the one of the guys but with a fairly different reason. Well, of course there are not many people out there using 640 x ???, so it's not worth paying attention to them.
On the other hand I would try to force them to change their settings. Although this is a little bit root, it makes web designing much easier. Image everyone in the world would use 1024 so you wouldn't have the problem of designing the site in a way that fits both resolutions. But you still need to design your site for 800. There are still a whole bunch of users out their on 800. And for some people it might be too expensive to be "forced" to buy a new graphic card and or monitor, although they are pretty cheap compared with 3 years ago.

IN future the design probably has to fit 1600 as well or at least 1200 if time is passing by as quickly as it was the last years...

We wil see ;D
