www.golfcourse.com and www.golflink.com obviously are using a database of all the courses in the country, it's unlikely they actually made each page one by one...

where might one find that database?

The database will be on their server somewhere and I doubt they will give you access to it unless you know the owner or something.

no i assume i won't be able to get it from any of those website, but what i mean is, THEY must have gotten it from somewhere, some kind of service that offers these databases...or rather, the list has to have originated somewhere.

The best way to find out is to get in contact with them and see if they'll tell you

Why not see if you can find a golfing forum? Someone there may have what you are looking for, otherwise there may be some keen members willing to help you populate your own, new, database.

i suppose first thing will be to email those sites and found out what they use, and then go from there.

Are you looking for a database of golf courses or database service software?

If the former, you'll need to do a lot of searching and ask the same questions they did.

If the latter, there are several CMS and php applications that can manage databases. If even that's too complex for the site you hope to create, check out Google Groups and some of the other google tools. You might be able to do everything you want there.

Since there are already some good golf course databases online, link to them rather than duplicate efforts. You can even ask if they have an affiliate or adlink program where you get a share of revenue from people who go to their site from yours. If your site can add value to their service, make sure to ask them to add a link to your site on theirs. (be sure to explain the specific value you believe you add.)

I'm guessing they in some way knew a vendor in the industry who had a large database. I did a similar app in another industry in PHP. Some people have done things like mine the Yahoo yellow pages for a particular topic (say pet stores) and then create a site that displays listings by region and state. This is a great way to make a made for adsense site. I did a few of these (not made only for adsense, but I'll tell you that it is not as easy as it used to be to use this strategy.
