Hi,

I'm still in the beginner stage and using Dreamweaver 3. Sorry if this is an obvious and/or stupid question. I have a word document (a few really) that I'd like visitors to my website to be able to download and open on their computers as word documents. I have no problem copying the text to a DW page and creating a link so that people can view it but I'm not sure how to create a link so that it opens on the user's computer as a word document and not as a DW page. I tried linking to the actual name of the document and setting the target frame source to "blank" but this just opens the contents of the word document in another browser window (and doesn't format correctly).

I know there's a way to do this because I've downloaded word documents from others websites, but just can't figure out how.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

My site: www.federguide.com

By clicking on the "download media kit" starburst on the homepage, you get right to the page where I'm trying to have the downloadable documents.

Thanks,
Erik

If you ftp the document to your server you should be able to add a link to that document. You would upload it to your server just like you would a new webpage. Then you can link it just like a web page. For example, the link would be www.federguide.com/documentname.doc
Then, when the user clicks on it, an option should appear to let the user open or save the document.

Hi Angele,

Thanks for the reply to my problem. I tried what you said and I get the following error message:

The requested URL /www.federguide.com/federguide_press_release.doc was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I tried to create the link both with and without the "www.federguide.com/" before the document name but I get the same error message. I verified that the document names are correct and I did upload the documents to my server.

I uploaded them as raw date. Could that be the problem?

My attempts are there on my website: http://www.federguide.com/download_media_kit.html

Thanks,
Erik

Okay, I just got home to where I could play around with dreamweaver and see what I could figure out.
I uploaded this document to my moms site
http://www.kindletheflamecandles.com/resume.doc
When you click on that does it open and allow you to "save as"
If so, this is what I did:
In the file section of dreamweaver, I browsed around in my computer files until I found a document. I right clicked and copied that document. Then I went to the remote view of my web page files and pasted the document into my main folder (the folder where all of my web pages are). Then I just typed that link into the browser. It doesn't really give you the option to "download" like other files do, but you can have your users save the document on their computer and it is basically the same thing.
Let me know where this gets you and if you need more help!

Well, it really is embarassing to be such a novice at this stuff. I tried to do as you suggested, part of that was made difficult because I'm on a Mac and part was difficult because I must not know enough! When I clicked on your link to the resume, it automatically opened as a word doc on my computer.

I've been uploading my word docs to my server to the same place where my web pages are - is that the same as pasting into your main folder like you talked about? I don't know what the remote view of my web page files means - I guess I should know that but I built my page without learning that. I just tried looking at the "site files" and "site map" but couldn't put my copy of the word doc in there.

I feel really dumb - this is probably so easy to do.

I don't understand why if I've made a link to my word doc and uploaded it to my server it doesn't link to it and open it. I did the same thing with a couple of .mp2 files and they open and play fine. the only difference is that they are in a separate folder - maybe I should try that?

Thanks for trying to help, it's very nice of you.

Dont feel dumb at all! I taught myself a lot of what I know, so I understand what it is like to feel like that. Anyway, what the "remote" view means is that you are looking at the files that are actually on your web host server. The "local" view means you are looking at the files that are only on your computer. So what I was meaning to say was to make sure the file is on the "remote" view to make sure it is actually on your web page server. That 404 error is making me wonder if the documents are maybe on your computer, but not getting to the server.
If you put your .mp2 files in a different folder and they worked fine, try to do the same thing with the documents. Maybe it will work that way. Dont feel dumb at all. Im not the greatest at explaining things, but if you need more help, you can post here, PM me or email me at skendall@cableone.net and I will do my best.
As for now, try to put the documents in a separate folder and see if that works.
