I am interested in creating a website that provides free information and was wondering how google.com offers their services free yet still makes a profit. They'res not many ads on the site.

Google make some profit from google ads around the side of their search engine but they also act as a broker for adverts by running adwords and adsense programs.

For example I may get 5 cents for getting a click on my google advert that I place on my site (through the adsense program) but the advertiser may have paid google 8 cents to get that click (through the adwords program,) therefore google make the 3 cents difference.

This means that Google Ads appear on many different websites, not just their search engine. Look at the adverts of alot of sites and there will be an "ads by google" note on them.

Their advantage comes from the fact that they are very good at targeting adverts to particular sites and search results so that their ads are relevent and get clicked on often.

The Google Adwords programme is huge and generates them a LOT of money. You can make money through it aswell by signing up for Adsense. This lets you put context sensitive adverts on your website. Every time someone clicks on one of the adverts on your site you'll get paid a few cents (sometimes it's a few dollars per click).

I've used it HERE to great effect.
