I am building a website for my wife's small business using FP 2000. Can someone point me to some info on the best (free) ways to increase the chances of it showing up in various search engines?

Good content, quality inbound links, a good title tag and meta name description all help.
But don't expect top ranking overnight. It will depend on the site subject matter, keywords and many other factors.

Look around the web for seo help. there are countless sites to help you including mine

Do some research and design the site for your visitors not the search engine spiders.
