hello,

Im starting out making some websites for people I know and am wondering if I need to tell my UK tax man?

Should I be declaring my websites as a business? As it is only a side line and I work fulltime in another un related job.

If i'm charging say £200 for a site, do I get it all? Or do you guys declare it?

Also - I need to write a TERMS OF SERVICE contract, any ideas were to start looking for suggestions and what to add?

I am hosting the websites personally, but wondered were I stand if a person pays me, then decides they don't want the site...Do i have to legally give them a refund?

Your help is geatful...

Hi,

If this is a small business then you will have to declare it. What constitutes a small business is the issue here, and if you make 5 websites in a year, then it is not, it will be classed as a hobby. If you make 5 websites a month, this is bordering on a business and you would most probably have to pay.

As for refunds. Just use the common tactic used by programmers and designers. You listen to the client, then tell them what you interpret their needs as and if they accept you design a mock site. You then take it to them and if they do not like it, ask why and make the changes. If they still do not like it and decide to go elsewhere, then you will be entitled to payment for time spent. If they accept, they will not be entitled to any refund as they have officially accepted your design.

Steve.

Great response...

Thanks pal.

More like 5 sites a year is more accurate!

Should I make some sort of contract to which they sign to say they are happy? Or is a verbal 'Build Me It' OK?

What would you suggest as a contract?

Thanks again...

You could make a contract, but to have it stand up in a court of law it would have to be properly done, if you are only making a few sites for small firms and don't try to rip them off they usually pay, but the most important thing is support them, and give them what they want, don't rush it so you get paid quicker.

As for the tax man **** him just don't invoice them and try and add VAT
