Use TrackEngine located here:
http://www.trackengine.com/
Sign up for your account and then put the TrackEngine Add Url shortcut on your browser at the top in the Links area. I use IE so I don't know if any other browsers have this.
Now what you need to do is like what I did. Go to Google and enter in the search field:
link: http://www.yoursite.com
Enter it just like that and then press search. This will find all the sites that are linking to you. I think this also works with AltaVista.
Now the resulting link is what you want to add to TrackEngine. Press your shortcut link in the browser window that is on the search results page to add that link to TrackEngine.
Give it a memorable name so you can view your stats online easier. I gave mine Google Search: My Site Name
You can then track every day, every 2 days, every 3 days or weekly.
It will notify you when new sites appear in the search and how many via email.
I received an alert today and NetDough had six new links found pointing to my site that were listed in Google.
To the best of my knowledge this service is still free and incredibly handy. I have been doing this now for about two years.
I hope this is found to be useful. Any question don't hesitate to ask.

Hi Drache,
I've known this for a very long time, but thanks for the reminder. I think I'll check out my link popularity now. But the only sites linking to mine are probably going to be the message boards that I participate on.

i use two such tools to check my link popularity.
the first, and most discreet url, "who would have thought this would be a link popularity check?" (forgive my british satire humour) is cunningly http://www.linkpopularitycheck.com
the second i found through google at http://siteowner.bcentral.com/linkfinder.cfm
both have served me well, but i'll look into your suggestion drach, thankx

Hi DaveTodd,
For Linkpopularitycheck.com, I noticed that they only query three search engines (MSN, Lycos, and Altavista). Now those are three big search engines, but isn't it missing out on the biggest of all, which is Google?
Also, the siteowner.bcentral.com site seemed like a very useful tool, but it's run by Microsoft. I'd be surprised if it queried any engine besides MSN, lol.

Hi ghettocars,
Just to let you know, Aimoo isn't a free service, but I'm promoting them because I am a moderator at support. 9cy.com is an average host now that they have partnered with 0Catch (but again, I'm including them in my sig because I used to manage accounts there).
I do happen to know lots of free hosts (but only a handful of cheap hosts). Post on the Web Hosting forum with your requirements, and I'll respond to it ASAP (we don't want the moderators to get mad with our off-topic posts here ).

thankx drach, i now have track engine in my faves, i'm hoping it works, cause i'm not to good with it. i followed the on-screen instructions, and it wouldn't add to my toolbar, so i added it to my faves instead, this be okay?
i also have marketleap.com in my faves, this seems like a useful tool to have.
now all i gotta do is get ranked...

Google Toolbar

The Google toolbar makes it a breeze. Either click on Page Info and select backlinks or right click and select backlinks. Works on any page you are browsing. Many other great features, also. Note: you can turn off the toolbar and still have the right click features.

I put mine in my Links toolbar. You have that one? If not just right click on your browser toolbars and make sure Links is checked.
Then go to trackengine and find this sentence:
Haven't enabled your browser with the [Track Me!] button? Drag this link Track me! to your browser toolbar now!
Where it says Track Me, grab that and drag it up to your links toolbar and that should do it.
I have it there and you have the same version of IE I do.

Glad you got it working now
And that menu looks great except the mouseover color doesn't really seem to go well.
I would change that... maybe a light blue? I really don't know but anything other than that hot pinkish kinda reddish color.
