I had a guy come round my house today from a company called Scheidegger Training to tell me about the training courses they offered on web design.

He concluded that a qualification called CIW in Web design is what i need for potential employers to even look at me.

The fact that i have experience in designing websites for models including maintainence,
image editing a HNC in mutimedia production and many other creative skills he insisted I was ''Commercially worthless'' and undesirable.

After an hour and a half he finalised offering me a place on a course which would cost £2,500 at £70 a month.
He called his office to have me risk assesed I apparently failed but he said he thought I was worthy so he gave me the nod.

He insisted for us to go any further he needed a £50 enrolment fee and to fill out a form stating all my qualifications and work history!

Once this fee was paid I would be given a pack that included tutorial cd roms.

I would be alocated a tutor who would assist me online where a great part of my training would take place taking up to 18 months.

He was very pushy and indirectly insulting making assumptions about me despite not knowing me.

Alarm bells rang and i asked him for a card so i can research his company and have a think.

He was not impressed and became a right pratt .

I walked him to the front door thanked him and told him he came very close to being
fed to my dog and anyone who drove a ford focus and thought themselves above the rest of us needs to have a long think.

All imature *****ng aside just what does an employer paying 20 to 30 k expect from a webdesigner/flash programmr these days.

Thanks.

A CIW is not needed, but helpfull. I'd say the main thing employers are looking for is experiance and a good portfolio...

Not exactly.

A colloge or uni student could design sites for people throughout their education which may be all well and good, but employers are not only looking for quality of work. Depending on the actual job role, there could be many other factors, one prime example being if there will be customer contact, the employer will want to know how well the candidate works with customers. Things like this won't be reflected in a portfolio.

I know but what i'm saying is that after a while of working with web design you build up a portfolio. i wasnt saying that all you need is a good protfolio..

This totally sounds like a scam to me. I would not have anything to do with this "training company". Anyway, I think some certifications can help. But experience and a good portfolio will display your abilities better. I used to work at a computer store and people would come in to apply for a job. They would brag about having A+ certification but many had hardly any experience. We would basically laugh after they left because just because you have a "certification" doesnt mean you actually know what you are doing in the real world.
Anyway, if your interested in CIW certificates, check out www.ciwcertified.com

i am in a similar situation. i need a job in the real world as well.

i took a course for £2550 and got my Master CIW Designer qualification in 6 months :P

the thing is im only 17 though! i need some professional experience. i have very good html/xhtml and css skills and im currently learning PHP (teaching myself).

i was told i should be able to find a job with a salary of at least £18k or around that.

at the moment im not really intersted in the money, just getting some professional experience and actually having something to show for a portfolio.

From what I can tell in the U.S. BOTH a piece of paper (a web degree or design degree) AND experience are needed to land something interesting. This of course makes it hard to find something. I know a lot of computer scientists fresh out of school with a BS who can find nothing but help desk or tech support jobs. Not to mention that a lot of smaller companies just fob off the web designing to an employee (happened to me, but I happily volunteered). I've heard a lot of stories from people I know who one day get told by their supervisor: "Okay - you're going to do our web site".

But in the end a good portfolio will land you a job a lot quicker than a piece of paper. Having both is of course ideal. But watch for scumbags like the guy that visited you. Augh. Frustrating. CIW is not essential, but the guy taking your $$$$$ apparently is.
