Hi,
I hope you can answer this question. I design websites and I have a problem with trying to keep my header permanently on the screen when someone is looking at different links. An example is go to site www.cybershopmall.com and click on any link. See how the header remains stationary. How do I do that?
Thank you

Hey amazing103,

Welcome to Webmaster-Talk

Well, what cybershopmall.com is doing is using frames.

It looks nice how they used them on their site, but something I don't recommend using for search engine ranking issues and design issues.

If you take a look at their source code it shows:

<FRAMESET border=0
frameBorder=0 frameSpacing=0 rows=91,*><FRAME name=header noResize scrolling=no
src="menu.htm" target="main"><FRAME name=main src="main.htm" target="_self">
<NOFRAMES>
<body>

<p>This page uses frames, but your browser doesn't support them.</p>

</body>
</NOFRAMES></FRAMESET></HTML>

If you still wanted to do this, it would not be to hard.
Let us know if we can help you further.

Hi,
Thank you for the information. I'm a novice at this, so please bear with me. 1. I couldn't find the frameset. 2. If I attempted to do this do I use my header as "menu.htm" or "main.htm"? 3. where do I put this in the site? If you could be a little more specific, I would appreciate it.
I'm sorry for the questions, they may be stupid, but I'm trying to learn.
Thank you
Joe

Hi Amazing,

I'm not a big supporter of frames and like to stay away from them, but that's only my opinion. You might consider putting your header at the top with navigation below it and add navigation to the bottom. No, people won't see your header as they scroll down the page, but they will come to the bottom navigation to get back to the top or to the next page.

One author wrote: Most beginners learning HTML have a lot of trouble getting frames to work well for them, and naturally conclude that frames are complicated and difficult to get right.

This is a misconception. Frames never work well for anyone mainly because of two reasons: (a) they are a bad idea in theory (b) they are a terrible technology in practice.

However, since 90% of the HTML questions that fill my mailbox every day concern frames, I am regretfully forced to deal with them in a tutorial. To appreciate the hatred I harbor against this devilish conception....

That might open some discussion and it didn't answer your question about how to use them. I'm sure there are a couple of webmasters here that can give you more information about implementing frames and as in your example, they can be used well.

Okay, don't beat up Dave 'cause he stuck an opinion in here.

Dave

amazing103,

I received your email. I am very busy at the moment so can not try and aswer your question at the moment.

Thank you for answering my question on frameset. You mentioned that if I wasinterested in using the frameset, you would help me and than you sent me an email that you would get back to me. I have a design editor program and it has
frameset, however I don't understand how to put it together. It's 3 parts and it's asking me to save. How do I save it on to the indx.htm? The 3 parts has frame1, noname1 and noname2. What do I use for the index? Thank you
Because I do not use Frames not never really have much, your questions is not a quick answer for me. I would actually have to design a page/pages myself with frames in order to answer your question. So, I can't promise when and if I will get the answer.

For that I apoligize, but I don't know the answer to everything.

Thank You.
