By the description it sounds like you are trying to connect to the server though Windows explorer..

It would be easier, safer and faster to use an FTP program.. I would recommend SmartFTP you can get it free at www.smartftp.com

The server name tells the FTP client where to connect to. You may have to ask your host for this address. A common server address is -

ftp.yourdomainhere.com

If your using SmartFTP you dont need to put ftp.domainname.com

You just put your site adress into the address box.. so like www.domainname.com doesnt matter if its .org or .name or anything

You then need to enter your username and password into the boxes, the port should be ok left as 21 then just hit enter

Once connected you can upload files by simply dragging and dropping them..

You can also find some tutorials at http://www.smartftp.com/support/howto/

When you say it wont connect exactly what do you mean. Does it just sit there and do nothing or does it give you an error message?

Make sure you have the User and Pass right as well as the domain. Remember to connect first before trying to upload the files. FTP --> Connect

First, you must understand what an FTP client does before you can configure it. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and in simple terms, allow you to copy certain files from your computer up onto a server that you have permissions to.

I would highly suggest you get with your ISP's help desk and let them walk you through it step by step, utilizing the program they recommend. Each ISP can set up their processes differently, so if you are very new, it would be best to begin there.

Does your site use frontpage extensions?
If so you need to be uploading / publishing by http not FTP.
