My basic method involves firstly slicing up each individual image from the design (I do normally forget the odd small one or two that I have to go back to later on).

I also normally create separate .psd files for each element, I find this makes things much easier when it comes to maintaining the web page in the future.

Once I have all the flat images ready, I then start coding the main CSS elements e.g. body, #wrapper, #header, #footer etc.

Then I sort of swap between CSS and HTML as I go along. I used to be constantly switching between the two but lately I've started doing the CSS in bigger chunks.

I also used to be constantly switching between FF and IE6 + 7. But I've started looking at IE less and less also, and saving most of the fixing for the end.

After watching this:

It's made me think of maybe coding all of the HTML first, as the author does. I think it's fine for a simple design like in the example, but what about a really complex design?

How does everyone here go about it?

I prefer to make folders within the PSD

That's what I do when designing it, but I find there are times where having separate psd's can make future changes a lot more efficient.

For example on my business website, I have one psd that contains all of the text for the headings (as I use CSS text replacement), then I have a psd that has all of the thumbnails for my image gallery etc.

That way if for some reason I decide that I don't want to have rounded corners on my portfolio thumbnails, I only have to change one path as their all within one masked folder in their own .psd.

I probably should get into actual slicing a bit more, but I hate the way Photoshop automatically puts them in a folder called 'Images', which isn't always what I need. I keep meaning to check if there is a way to stop it from doing that, but haven't got around to it!

Yeah sometimes I mistakenly save for the web in the wrong directory so I end up with images/images since photoshop works in a way where if you don't slice but use save for the web then it will save in the selected directory otherwise any slices will mean any image saved for the web will go into a image folder but after a while I have systematically adjusted to it and find it a practicality when working.

I guess my annoyance is when I write out the XHTML then the CSS and then when I go to preview it - it is in complete shambles. I could preview as I write out the page but when you do it on a regular basis, you start to picture the code and it becomes second nature if you know what I mean.

I see what you mean. I tend to preview regularly incase I'm doing something seriously wrong, but switching windows and refreshing can add on a lot of time overall! Oh well...
