I believe minimal designs are best, though be sure to include a decent amount of text and an SEO-friendly footer to ensure high rankings in SERPS.

Check out the competitors to your potential e-commerce website; list the positives and negatives and better it.

There is no absolute standard or trend. It all depends on project type and then it distorts depending on rivals.

exactly...If you think from the deeper aspect. The best think to keep in mind while putting such a site together is to think like you are to satisfy your customers. Think from the view point of a customer and provide all the user friendly aspects that would be a comfort as well as desire for a customer.

I have checked out the competition and they all have minimal site design, very simple.

For e.g. just a header with one color, their logo and the rest of the body is just white background. They have placed emphasis on the product images but not on the site design.

Yeah,

I also designed a minimalistic e-commerce website which received good feedback from the client.

but then my most recent e-commerce design was a bit more complicated but I guess it was necessary since they wanted an information hub based design.

I think that most ecommerce sites are simple due to the nature and purpose of the site.

The site developers are interested in directing the customers to the product rather than the design of the site itself, it about usability rather than complicated design.

Basically people are going for a simple look light colors, to give it a friendly look. I would recommend looking at websites like http://foxycart.com and http://shopify.com/ both of these give examples of e-commerce sites that have been made using their software, and they are usually have the most up-to-date trends.

Also you can just look at those websites themselves, because they are also trying to sell their own product. Just look at e-commerce sites and look at what they do, and come up with your own way to make it better.

Don't always stick with the trend, you can be a trend setter. Another thing to consider is that trends are changing constantly, so there is no one thing that defines a trend. Trends come and go like the wind, it could be here, or it could be on the other side of the world, if you understand what I am getting at.

I think we are making huge strides from creating sites with Html and CSS to using Open source like WP. E-commerce is not in this stage yet but at one point everything will eventually convert to those type of sites.
