Does anyone have any recommendations with any software that can take credit card payments, I have a Paypal service, but would also like to have a service for credit cards as not everyone have paypal.

PayPal take credit cards without an account.

You need a merchant account but they cost to set up and what you can use will depend on where you are in the world.

Google and Paypal are the best for starting out since there is no overhead cost.

Yes, Google and Paypal are no cost ways to collect payments on a website, but they cause the user to be redirected off your site to make the transaction. (Albeit, that you can skin your checkout pages to a certain extent)

Which is fine for most online "weby" products but it does make the checkout process "less congruent". Paying for the Paypal's Website Payment Pro or for Authorize.net account will allow you to make the checkout process seamless as you can submit their information via the API behind the scenes.

If you really need to convey "professionalism" of a product or service then using a paid service that allows you to complete the entire checkout process on your site makes better sense in the long run.

The google checkout is only for US and the UK, I have Paypal, but I thought people can only pay my paypal account if they have a paypal account.

I you have a Visa or Master Card, you could be payed directly via credit card. IMO.

I use paypal and was thinking about switching over to google checkout. I don't find the the offsite pages too intrusive to my customers. I think most people are use to that at this point.

For my merchant account, I have a website that I login to and can manually process credit cards. If you're looking to have payment directly connected to your site you will need a payment gateway.

As mentioned above, Authorize.net is very popular.
