Anyone think generators like dreamweaver, Frontpage will ever take over from hand coding websites?

Never... they just add unneeded junk to your code

Your better off hand coding.. That way you learn more aswell.. also its more of a skill if you can hand code it compared to using a WYSIWYG editor

Yea it does leave loads of unwanted code when using dreamweaver. Think I am going to hand code all the sites I create.

I do that too when I'm at work (Code in ASP at work, use ASP.NET at home, and hand code in Web Matrix). I like the code editor in DW. It has good autocomplete, and good colour coding. I need good colour coding... I love viewing the source of my pages in the Firefox source viewer, looks like artwork.

Use colorbox and pixie for your color coding and you don't need DW. Liz

I must say that when you hand code a website I think its alot quicker to update, than using dreamweaver. Coding is the way forward, unless Generators like dreamweaver, frontpage etc have better faclity's to clean out all unwanted tags it leaves. Thanks People for your opinion's.

I never liked using DW to color code anyway...I KNOW I'm suppose to use websafe colors but I tend to use whatever color strikes my fancy. I DO use websafe colors on my business site but on my personal sites, it's a different story.

Mainly I try to match the graphics I am using as linkware since I don't make my own. I haven't mastered that yet so I borrow and give credit for the graphics I use. But I also try to make it as aesthetically pleasing as possible. Liz

I like DW for many of the already stated reasons. I use it to handcode php and ASP.NET, I also like the built in FTP feature for making quick changes without having to upload to the site. I just hit ctrl-s and voila, the world sees my masterpiece in action.

I think that mostly website designers get offended by WYSIWYG editors because they take business away from them. They also do teach noobies quite alot about HTML. I see it as the beggining of greatness for some, for others its just a convenient way to code.

exactly. this is precisely what i do and its actually a huge time saver. if i want to view my site visually really quickly i just turn on the half code half gui interface. sure dreamweaver can leave a lot of extraneous code on your pages when just using their gui interface, but its really no different than text editor when using the coding section. so in my opinion they will take over. there is no way these programs won't take over. if anything they will just get better and not include the extra code.

What the future holds? If the web becomes more and more interactive with more scripting and programing involved then hand coding must be the way ahead. However, there are strong movements the other way to more flash and video and sound. These are forms of content that require specialist editors to create them. In the future, web pages may not even have any html to hand code in. Be prepaird for changes.

First off I must say I haven't used DWMX for more than 5 minutes, unfortunatly I've used FP and DW3 more so my opinion is tainted by the bad taste left in my mouth from these.

I don't think that they really teach noobs alot about HTML. I think they teach them how to hack together a website without learning some of the more important skills such as DocTypes and good CSS practices. If you look in the HTML/CSS forum you will see many examples of people who use WYSIWYG editors and who have problems that a simple HTML class would fix. I think that people who aspire to become webmasters should not be the macho "self-taught" but should take a class even if it is a simple one. I'm not saying don't ask if you have problems. But many of these questions are very elementary and do not need to be asked and I blame the WYSIWYG editors.

BTW I use Textpad to do all of my handcoding, but a friend of mine uses Adobe GoLive CS (which I was impressed by) I only saw it for about 20 minutes, and need to look at it more.

I used both hand coding and Dreamweaver. The last let you do the same thing easier, but I think that first of all you should learn hand coding. Because if there would be no WYSIWYG editor, you always can write anything you need in Notepad

I personally like to handcode in dreamweaver; you can see it while your work.. makes it better than notepad for me. Lately I have been swamped and I only hand code certain sites now. I try to outsource alot fo it now but when it gets rough DW can make things go fast and the code isnt TOOOO messy

Interesting analogy, especially since there are so many places you can still learn to hand code such as:

http://www.w3schools.com/

http://webmonkey.wired.com/webmonkey/

http://www.geocities.com/davelanthorn/davepage.html

http://www.htmlgoodies.com/

http://www.lettice.net/tutorial/

http://www.webdevelopersnotes.com/t...html/index.php3

http://developers.evrsoft.com/

http://www.earthweb.com/

http://archive.ncsa.uiuc.edu/Genera...HTMLPrimer.html

http://www03.pogo.com/index.jsp?sls=2

http://www.pongo.com/

http://www.virtuallyignorant.com/webtutor.htm

http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs

http://lissaexplains.com/

http://www.456bereastreet.com/

This is a very good site for almost anything about web and web developement, including the free classes:

http://webdesign.about.com/library/...ng/bl_begin.htm

And I have seen places advertise for web developers who know hand coding, NO wysiwyg! They didn't want someone who designed on Dreamweaver or Frontpage, they wanted a hand coder. So maybe we are *in the dark ages* but our code isn't bloated with excess and we HAVE to pay attention to what we do, because it isn't corrected for us. We don't have something going back over it for us. If we make a mistake, it's there. And we have to play hide and seek to find it. No program to hunt it for us. Liz
