I added a forum to my web site a short time ago, and am having hacking problems, not with that site , but another in the same account hosted by IX Webhosting. Could the forum be a problem, I wonder.

I'd be interested to hear what anyone might think.

I have already checked my MAC and changed the passwords to my account over and over again. The hacking continues with bad iframes being added to the home page.

Which forum software did you use?

The big ones (vBulletin for example) are usually good but let's face it. Nothing is unhackable... Also consider that any mods you implement may be a serious factor for holes.

If you have downloaded one for free and it costs money, (warez) then sure, it definitely has some modded code...I've seen plenty of scripts that do anything from report back to the developers email to performing undesirable results through out your forum. I've seen some very well thought out undesirable code come from forum scripts. This goes for any kind of software / script / video / audio / ebook or anything that can be run on your computer.

I downloaded my forum from www.phpbb.com/ who seem to be used quite a lot over the internet. The forum has been live for 4 months now and have not spotted any obvious hacking problems in the forum itself. Keeping fingers crossed!

I'd say any of the common forum software are pretty safe, even the free ones like phpbb or smf.

I'd say any of the common forum software are pretty safe, even the free ones like phpbb or smf. But obviously the paid ones like vB and IPB are going to be more reliable.

When you say 'homepage' do you mean the page you create, or do you mean the homepage of the forum software you used?

If it's not the homepage of the forum then it's probably not the forum software that's causing the issue.

If the forum and the website are using separate databases (assuming the website is dynamic and actually uses a database) then why would the main website get hacked as a result of the forum getting hacked? They are two individual entities, you simply have a html link to the forum on your website. If something happens to the forum there's no way it can travel to your site (unless of course you use the same database for both).

If you keep your forum up-to-date, there should be no problem. I have 2 phpBB forums and they are running nicely. You just have to be quick to install any new release with security fixes.
