thoughts on which cms for me to use

i haven't created a site using any CMS tool before, but i'm quite interested in learning one... i've worked with creating static html/css sites and a little bit of php, but creating from scratch like this (and maintaining) can be time consuming!
i'm going to start working on a tag/touch rugby site... the main goal for the site is to display information about game schedules, game results, and other related upcoming sports events
the site will enable organizers to update game schedules and news (Which will most probably be in the front page)
there is also a likely chance that an extension will be added for an online Community Discussion Board (Forum)
at the moment i'm looking at Wordpress (Which i think is the easiest to learn - and can have some powerfull features/plugins without overdoing things)
can some one make some recommendation on suggestion on this? thanks in advance...
anyways, i've created a simple layout for a start http://www.centraltag.co.nz

I have just begun to work with joomla. I downloaded it a week ago and it seems to be pretty decent. I dont know all the in's and out's of it yet, but it seems to be a good platform. Might be worth looking into....

Well, I can second your thoughts on using Worpress. I have coded many sites from scratch and found the theme learning curve to be pretty easy. There are a ton of tutorials on it.
There a bunch of cool calendars that you can use for managing events, etc.
You can allow other writers to make posts on the site.
There is a plugin for forums http://simplepressforum.com/ and other methods, I have never installed a forum on WP though, so I couldn't tell you how good they are.
If the forum will be the most important part, then perhaps joomla or Drupal or other options would be better.
I can't say enough about WP though, and NOT just for blog sites, I use for complete CMS for almost any site.

Bear in mind that WP is a blogging system, not a true CMS. While it's true that there are oodles of plugins that extend it's functionality it has it's limits. I'd recommend trying it out anyway so see if it fits with your needs.
You mighta lso want to look at...
ModX (CMS)
Expressionengine (CMS)
MoveableType (Blog)
amongst others
For a more complete list of CMS's have a look at http://cmscritic.com/cms-list - there are lots listed to suit most requirements.

thanks guys... i have installed Joomla, Drupal, and Wordpress locally on my PC for testing purposes... i haven't gone deep enough on any of them, but i find from first touch the simplicity of Wordpress in comparison to the other two! But ofcourse it has it's limit compared to the other two, but the site i'm building will probably be simple enough that Wordpress might be sufficient...
I think i'm more concerned about the quickness and easyness of working with Wordpress

I definitely think that you should use wordpress. I have seen huge news sites that still use it. It is the easiest.

i agree, also another point is that my client(s) will do most (if not all) of updating and feeding data onto the site... looking at the back-end of Wordpress it just looks very simple to the standard computer user...

When I first started using Wordpress, I made the mistake of only thinking of it for blog website clients. The more I have gotten into WP however, the more I realize that it can, in fact, be used as a true CMS. The main reason is for the 'custom fields'. You can have ANY type of data there assigned to a variable and then pull that variable from the database on any page EASILY. (No, not nearly as full functional as a node in Drupal before anyone yells at me!)
If I, as a designer, at first look at Drupal and joomla's back-end, I saw some confusion, I imagine most clients will too. That's not to say I don't approve of those, in my experience, I have made WP site for a 70 yr old person with little computer knowledge and he was writing articles and uploading images THE DAY his site was ready!
On the other hand, as others have mentioned, there are things that Drupal and joomla do better for an extensive site, or one that will feature ecommerce.
Here's a helpful article that points out many of the things WP can do as a CMS.
http://www.noupe.com/wordpress/power...wordpress.html
This is all not to mention the fact that I was creating pretty extensive custom themes(from scratch) for WP in one week vs. Drupal(which I am still reading their bad documentation!)

Don't get me wrong both wordpress and joomla are great. Just seems people are over looking the abilities of e107 in a lot of these situations. This is another case where I would use e107 for the CMS grab a plugin called clan info menu. It was designed for video gamers. But I think you will see the value of having it for your rugby site. As this will display every thing you are wanting to do with the team records, scheadul team information and the ability to be updated by the team coaches. This sounds like it would be the best fit dor what you are wanting to add to your site. Plus with the ability to blog using the news section (basically a blog just different name) you will have the functions of wordpress as well. you can get all the plugins you need from e107coders.org templates and the core files from e107.org. You should really look at this before you decide.

I just gave up on Drupal. Drupal SUCKS!
My host told me I either had to upgrade to $$ account or they were terminating my account. Why? Because apparently Drupal now has a HUGE ISSUE with become a massive memory hog. The solution being espoused over at drupal.org is to go into your php.ini file and KEEP INCREASING MEMORY LIMIT until the issue goes away. Well, that solution doesn't for the host when all their Drupal clients start taking extraordinary amounts of memory to run even the simplest of sites.
Drupal out of the box is plain ugly. To get the site you want you add modules. The common modules being added are CCK, Views, Panels, Taxonomy, Chaos Tools, and Advanced Forums, and these are the basic modules recommended for building a decent site. Throw on top of that the usual assortment of modules for things like blogging, api's, and what have you and what you end up with is a site that takes up a disproportionate amount of memory, so much so in fact that hosts will either boot you or demand you upgrade to the more $$ accounts.
See http://drupal.org/node/466254 - Fatal error on allowed memory size, regardless of how high memory_limit set to in php.ini. Needed to delete modules. What gives? Of course I also had to deal with the issue that Drupal 6.13 is not fully compatible with latest version of PHP, then you can troubleshoot your way through various versions of php and drupal to get everything working.
It's BS like this that makes me think Drupal just isn't ready for the mainstream yet. They act like they are still in beta. Forget about asking for help at Drupal.org, that is one of the least helpful forums around. Compare Joomlas and Wordpress' forums, where members jump at the chance to help out other members. Joomla or Wordpress is the way to go, for free CMSes. Frog CMS is also good.
Hope that helps and please excuse the ranting.

Main benefit of using wordpress is there are plenty of themes and website designs are readymade. If you know web design than you can easily edit them and can use for your personal use.
So I think wordpress is good for you and with this CMS you will get plenty of plugins which will make your task more easier.
Best of luck and let us show your creation to us as well.

I would absolutely 100% recommend Joomla. Wordpress isn't nearly as solid with the features, and Drupal is just too dang hard to figure out with not as many features either.
Joomla is the best, fastest, easiest and you won't be disappointed. I can build a complete Joomla site with content jampacked with features in 1-2 days. It's awesome

Indeed joomla is awesome, the fact of the matter is that he wants it for usability for his clients, and wordpress will just simply be much easier. And Wordpress is as solid, if not more solid than Joomla, but they are just built for different purposes. If you want to start up a business site for a large corporation, Joomla will be more suited for you because of all of the functionalities in the extensions page.
But for wordpress for a smaller company, or for a blogger, it is much more ideal because it is faster, easier to edit, more plugins, more user friendly, and there is great support for it.

Just thought I mention dotnetnuke, I just moved a joomla based site to a dotnetnuke based and found dotnetnuke to be a much more stable system. The only downside of dotnetnuke is that there are less plugins(modules) available and it requires windows hosting which is abit more expencive then linux hosting but otherwise I am really happy with it
