Currently, I'm trying out xstandard. It seems very powerful, mainly because it's the only editor I know about to generate valid xhtml and is using css.

I do like all the convenient features of Dreamweaver, etc., but somehow there's nothing quite using a simple text editor.

I use Notepad for mine but I've discovered that I need to use Dreamweaver for tables I haven't managed to learn to hand code that yet! As far as the colors, there are two neat little programs you can download for free. One is called Pixie and the other is ColorBox, I use both, sometimes together. Pixie: http://www.nattyware.com/?m31 and Colorbox: http://www.kobayashi.com/colorbox.html Liz

Dreamweaver is so much more than people think. I use it for everything, including .net and PHP. It is simply the best!!

zcorpan, thanks for the web site...now I can learn to do them on my own and NOT depend on dreamweaver unless I want to be lazy that day. Liz

Straight coder here.

I "see" the page from code level including rgb hex color codes. Hand-coding allows for the most optimization of the page. It allows for shorter download times and less bandwidth-consumption. It ensures usability and accessibility as well as cross-browser compatibility. I babble on for hours on my site about hand-coding and standards compliance (something that all but one wysiwyg are incapable of), but always acknowledge a need for the wysiwyg's and designers.

While I respect designers (couldn't make a 'pretty' site to save my life), all "web pages" should pass by a coder. The two skills together represent the science and the art of the internet and compliment each other.

I'm currently using Komodo for my development work. Manly cause I can use the same application when running in Windows as in Linux. Which is nice. I still do drop into dreamweaver though, when i want something quick for demonstration purposes.

I think notepad is the best becuase it's fast and easy. I have done a little with Frontpage but have never really like what has come out of it.

I use EditPlus, I also have Dreamweaver MX but haven't played with it enough to feel comfortable using it.

I used notepad for years but when I came across Crimson Editor I switched. It's basicly the Mozilla of text editors, tabbed pages, colored syntax, I love it.
