Welcome to the 20th Century! ;-)

I'm still using Allaire Homesite 4.5.

The thing is, I own the latest of the Macromedia suite, but I still feel like I get a lot more done in Homesite than I do using those WYSIWYGs. That was a sad day when Allaire went away. Even Macromedia's Homesite 5.0 is not as good as Allaire's Homesite 4.5

Don't get me wrong. Macromedia is a great company with great products. However, I personally work best in Homesite 4.5. ...Maybe it's my anal/perfectionist nature.

to the virus

you dont need one i only use one for school because everyday i do the anouncement pages and the source code is 35 miles long and i have 25 minute so basiclly you only need note pad but there is crimson editor from download.com which tells you which line you are on and has syntax colors so that makes source code a little easier

For me, it has to be plain text scripting (ie Notepad). You know the code that way. I also use Dreamweaver, but I always find it pretty boring and stale.

Textpad -- Textpad.com

It supports syntax highlighting of HTML, PHP and any other language you can imagine. You can even write your own syntax highlighting definitions if you'd like.

I like it because I can edit text, PHP, HTML, JavaScript -- everything -- in one editor and all will be properly syntaxed according to their respective file extensions.

I chose Dreamweaver although to be quite honest, I use a txt editor more often. Its easier to tweak code, or just make a quick addition. I tend to use Dreamweaver when Im creating a new page from scratch.

I like a program i downloaded called HTML-kit. It is straight forward and to the point. Its like notepade, but it lets you preview the html and has some tags and stuff. Nice colors. Very straight forward.

I taught myself HTML in Notepad, then quickly found Arachnophilia, which gave me some shortcuts and turned out to be a good editor. But for the last several years I have used 1st Page 2000 by Evrsoft. Freeware, and you can set it up in one of four levels of expertise. Not a WYSIWYG, but has viewing properties in it that are great. Contains some JS scripts, DHTML, CSS, and you can write ASP in it.

I'd go with Notepad.

Nothing is as reliable as hand coded HTML.

Dreamweaver!

I started off with Notepad.. I used FrontPage for a little while because it was faster and easier and then I met Dreamweaver. I use it for everything, including coding. I like it for design because it is much faster and there is always the option to switch over to html view if you need. As for coding, the fact that it highlights the code just makes everything easy to find. It really saves a lot of time! I dont use any of the built in coding options though. It's also very nice to be able to flip over to design in half a second to 'beta test' your hand coding. If the design does not display properly you know you didnt do something right.

Frontpage is mine ... Dreamweaver is second ...

but this is only because i have been using Frontpage for quite a lot of time and too little Dreamweaver ... so i'm more used to it ... and since i work a lot on code directly, the main design is all i do in Frontpage as a WYSIWYG editor - classes, style are added afterwards on the code (easier for me that way) ... i don't exactly see a big difference.

what exactly do people love about one or another?

I like dreamweaver a lot, i used to code everything with notepad, but now it's just drag, drop, clean, which works a lot faster. The mouse-over code are crap in dreamweaver imho though.

Love Dreamweaver! Started out 10 yrs ago with Cute HTML, then Front Page but for the past 6 yrs or so it's Dreamweaver all the way.

I split my view half in code mode, half in design mode. I like being able to see both at the same time. I'm not advanced (yet) in HTML coding, I need the extra help to get me started, but I'm advanced enough that I can correct the HTML code when needed so having the code color coded (compared to notepad) is nice to have. I also really like how easy it is to publish everything, set up new folders and moving stuff around (without breaking links).

Right now I wouldn't use anything else.
