I have a client I just took on and I am a bit afraid he is just going to rip my code and not pay me. On a side note I also feel that he is worried I am going to "Take the money and run" (although he never suggested or said anything about doing such) anyway I want to be able to give him his page without the content on it just so what he claims will be "good for his clients to see" for some reason. Not really sure what the layout is going to do for them if it doesnt have any information to go along with it but who knows. Anyway the only reason I feel he is going to rip the code is because during the first interview with him her suggested ripping code from another site and just putting his information in it. I already have my deposit but I do not want to do all the work and get taken for the major chunk of the project either.

Basically is there a way for me to hide the code from him but still give him and his clients the pretty layout I made for him to look at. I am almost thinking just making the layout into a jpg and posting it on his home page lol. But I also want him to know I am serious and wont rip him off either. Im not sure really what to do or how or where to go about doing anything at all I would just like some advice or maybe even how to just make the code invisible from any other users. (no disableing right click option to easy to get around)

also no contract was SIGNED but I did list in the guidelines I wrote up for this project that on payment of "X" amount I would put up all the pages with content.

Thanks,
TreyeMe

Well, I don't really know of a way off hand that will make your client not think your going to rip them off. Whenever you first do business with someone you run into that factor. I only run into it when I work with people over the computer. I work in such a small community where I live they all know my good name and its a safety net. As far as the "invisible coding" goes you could try encryption ( http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...earch&aq=f&oq= ). But, remember if they are smart they decrypt the coding and be able to use it.

I've run into the same problem you have before. What I did was on the design itself I watermarked The-Pixel Copyright over the whole template. If you choice this method make sure they see your company name on it and not just copyright. This way if they do rip your design / coding your company name is over the design and not just copyright. I hope I was helpful. Hang in there most people have been in the same situation as you so, don't think your the only one. Best of luck.

I dont really have much leverage if they rip the code from me. Normally I would just hold the account hostage with the domain password and ID but he went and set all that up on his own. On top of it all it would take him close to a week to send a couple revisions but he wants his whole site up and running in a couple days. -_- I honestly think he is going to rip me off. and I have been stalling trying to figure out a way to get around this without him thinking im gonna rip him off. Maybe ill just do the work and if I get the code ripped from me Ill just.....DO NOTHING...anyone want to send me any of their high paying loyal clients my way lol

I was also thinking about breaking the code so it would only work in certian cases. and then uploading proper code after payment.....I dunno im lost anyone else got any suggestions?

Make the HTML into a JavaScript array, insert it into the DOM, then compress all of the code with something like packer. He'll still be able to take a snapshot of the DOM if he's smart, but most people won't know what to do with it. The resulting code looks like this: http://wayfarerweb.com/mockups/event_planner/

But there's tons of ways to decrypt it.

cant answer anything about the coding, but as far as the client is concerned use the escrow. that way you both will be sure that money is not lost

I have been wondering how designers handle this as well. You would think there would be a standard way of doing this, software or something. What about sticking the site inside of a frameset? If they are not asking for the files, but just a view prior to purchase it would work right?

Very nice suggestion. That would be an ideal solution for him if he's truly that worried about it.
