How important is a logo?

With so many sites out there is there any need for a logo when you start a website?
I'd think it was highly unlikely that anyone would remember your logo - or does it make your site look more professional in some way?
thanks
James.

What you have to do is choose how you want your site to be advertised. Even if you choose to use a logo, it is but one part of your overall package. You have to identify your target market and ask, "What will make my site memorable, and visitors to it want not only to visit, but to return?" A well-done logo will not help a poorly-done site.
However, a logo, so long as it looks professional, can help a business site, and can be used as a favicon to help with branding identity and ease of location when bookmarked.

If you plan to brand your site other places, newspaper, television, et.....
A logo is essential.
If nothing less you should have a Trademark or Servicemark.
Coke, Pepsi, ATT, VISA, need I say more..........

Actually, I said that the best-done logo will not help a poorly-done site. I also said that logos can be important as a means of branding a site, but it is only one aspect of a well thought out and executed marketing strategy.

Logos are great assuming your content, ad placement, template, etc. are also in good condition, in which case they are excellent for branding opportunities.

I think initially, its not as important in comparison to later on when your website starts generating a lot more traffic.

Personally, I feel that a logo is very important. It distinguishes you from anyone else. A logo could be the difference between being remembered and forgotten. If your site is ‘boring’ that’s how you will be remembered, or forgotten for that matter.

From a branding stand point, a logo is very important b/c you want your audience to elicit your site to that logo.

logo is the heart and soul of a any brand. Kapferer the brand management guru created a brand prism. There are 6 factors that were related to branding, the first is physique and logo is an important part of it.

A Logo is pretty important. For instance let's say you and another site or company had similar, or under some other pretext, identical company names, but you had diffrent logos. Well that would help people to distinguish between the two of you. Also, imagine someone who just isn't good at reading or something. They couldn;t read your slogan, or a text logo of yours, but they could see that little icon image (or big image!) and they'd be able to say to themsevles "Oh, that's X-company/site I was looking for!".
I believe it's pretyt important, but you have to consider what it is you want people to remember, and who you want to attract as well.

There are a lot of things that contribute towards the success of a business, a logo design goes a long way to establish the identity and exude the attitude of the company.
A professionally designed custom logo can be very powerful in representing the company profile, the nature of job they do and the attitude of the company, it can also help to build the identity of the company and distinguishes your service from your competitors in the industry.

In trekkie speak, your logo is your emissary which is given the task of making the first contact with a new civilization (the customer) and creating upon them a lasting, memorable impression.
Here's a good read on this subject:

no a logo is not very important. if you have fantastic content, you dont need a logo. logo's are just your companies signatures. it is good to have them, you newer know when you become the next Microsoft or Google!

I think a logo makes a business look more professional. Take some time to think of a good one or invest in a professional to do it for you. Just my .02 cents.

Hi,
If you are running a business fromyour site then it is more important.
If you have a full time job and websites are just a bit on the side then not really worth the bother.
So many proffesional FREE templates out there too. If you do a search you will find heaps of them and they look really good.
Goodluck.
