Currently, it looks like a design done in Paint. Try to come up with something simple whereby all the news will be in one section of the page, comments & articles a small portion on the right or so.

Maybe you could try some free templates?

Right. What are your Css/HTML skills? As well, how are you currently managing your content? If you really want to put in some effort, you could try creating your own layout. Here are some css layouts to help you:

Additionally, you could use free templates if you aren't quite so good with those languages, and simply change the images/colors to work for you. No need to start from scratch if you don't have to!

And there's always the option of hiring a designer.

A few things I would suggest starting with are below:
  • Get a unique logo
  • Try to focus on less is more (right now there is quite a bit of text on the page and nothing drawing it in...try and put the occasional image to draw the readers attention)

Hi,
I suggest you redesign the site from the bottom-up. Start with a liquid template, such as http://blog.html.it/layoutgala/, and weave in some of your own ideas. Since you want your site to be content based, I suggest you have a rethink about how you display the news information. I think you should use a div structure, and have it like the news posts on a blog, or somehting like that. If you don't have much CSS experience, I suggest you have a look at the books below, have a look for them in your local library, or failing that, buy them there.

One or two points:
1) You need a favicon.
2)Redo the links page.
3) Cut down the number of foreign leagues. The site's .co.uk, so the main focus should be British Leagues.
4) Redo the menu, use a clean CSS setup.
5) Don't forget to obtain some books, I find them invaluable, but failing that, find lots of information online.
6) Produce a logo. You'll need at least PS Elements, and a colour scheme in mind.
7) Use Kuler at Adobe Labs for the colour scheme.
8) Scrap the animation / don't put it in. It looks cheap and distracting.
9) Try and have some personal input. Make a weekly post yourself on the home page (keep it for this, and a discription of the site), pointing out a couple of stories, your opinions, anything.

There you go!
