I recently posted a small Flash video on a site. Due to the whole <embed> vs. Microsoft fiasco I had to use a javascript to display the flash - to make it more cross-browser friendly. I am hoping that all Operating Systems/Browser combinations are able to view the flash on this page.

Please visit www.craigsmithrv.com and report if the Flash is or is not showing up ... it's located a short way down the home page in the center of your screen ... look for the fireworks.

Kindly report here with findings and let me know your Operating System, Browser and Browser version information.

Thank you!!

I ran it in FF and Safari and it works fine in both. However the flash seems to be pretty buggy and slow to react.

The site also looks pretty outdated and the background is awful distracting.

Thanks to all for your help.

Outdated? Interesting comment. The site was just launched and uses over 90% transparent PNGs and some pretty advanced scripts - things not supported by browsers even just a few years ago. What in your opinion is outdated about it?

Rocket Theme seems to be used quite a bit these days. I know a guy in the web business that that PNG Joomla theme and it seems pretty buggy in general.

The massive amount of png's and and scripts combined with flash elements makes the site a bit slow on my end.

I'm running an older pc (but not that old) Pentium 4, 1.9 Ghz, 1.0 GB of RAM and when I mouse over the zoom menu it slows the flash to a stop. That's probably what they're seeing.

Id suggest losing the video on the home page and/or linking to it somewhere. Or you might want to check out:

http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=JW_FLV_Player and using Flash 8 or some swf to flv converter, convert your .swf to flv to a modern optimized video. flv is a much smaller/faster loading format.

You might want to check a few of these too?
W3C Errors

Cool site though...

Thanks for the comments and for the help on this! My client "loves" the background and all of the transparencies ~ but I do realize the site is a bit "heavy" on loading and running. The flash graphic expires in a few weeks and I'll tighten up the ship at that time.

Again ... thanks to all for your help on this!

Let me ask you about this. The video on my site is in FLV format, but uses the SWF file to load. If I understand you, you're saying I can bypass the need for the SWF and go straight to the source FLV file using this tool (you linked to)?

No. It still uses an swf to play the video.

That player is highly customizable and works well with flv. It's also very popular. It can be loaded and play via xml play list style or a single flv. You can set a background image to load instead of playing right away. Let the user decide if he/she wants to play the video.

I think it comes packaged with swfobject.js to avoid that IE click to activate annoyance.

There are definite downfalls in using too many javascript's on one page. I think thats the biggest problem you have.

I would try this also. http://javascriptcompressor.com/ Do one at a time and test. but this could greatly reduce the size of load times?

In my case we need the video to start playing when the page loads, not load in a control box (appear to be part of the page it resides on) and repeat when finished. Three strikes for YouTube on that one ...
