I am wondering what others might be thinking on this issue.

Should I spend my time working out design issues with my vbulletin site and neglect the need to continue to add decent content to its associated site.

or

should I hire someone to do a one-time reconfiguration of the site for me and allow me to continue to build content.

This site is young and has a few fairly good (i think) content pages. Good enough that I get a small but steady stream of people contacting via the website. Content for this site is king, and the forums traffic will be entirely dependant on the traffic to the content side.

As an alternate, I guess I could contract out some of the content also.
I am a bit skeptical about that...

I have come across dozens of sites that used the default vBulletin design and they had thousands of members. In my opinion the standard vBulletin design is adequate.

When you have a great community then you may have members that can help with the site redesign. I spent a lot of time designing a site and did not put any energy into creating content. I still have the design ... and still have few members.

My vote is on generating content!

you know, I should know that already... I just get distracted at times spinning my wheels looking at other sites, etc.

I know that content is king, especially if I want this site to work.
I know that it will, the other two forums that deal with this are either small or horribly impossible to use (yahoo forums)

yeah.. content is king absolutely. You could have the best design and the greatest looking layout but if you have no content your not going anywhere. What is your site by the way?
