Hello!

What would you say is the best screen size of a website. I've just started on a new one, but i know it wont fit on most monitors. Mine is set to 1280 x 960 which makes it hard to judge on smaller resolution. I hate changing it as is messes with my icons .

So, what's a good size to use in this age?

You'd probably be safe designing for 1024x768 however there are some users still using 800x600. I think the industry standard is still designing for 800x600 however that is moving towards 1024.

Well you can design for 1024x768 as most people are suggesting....Though i prefer to design for 800x600 as it covers a larger basis of people.

And if you want to capitalize on the extra screen real estate then you can plan for a minimum of either 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768 and make it fluid to accomodate for the size the browser is at.

According to my Google Analytics data:

1024x768 40.97%

1280x800 16.00%

1280x1024 13.91%

1440x900 5.78%

1680x1050 5.05%

800x600 4.57%

The remainder % are all higher resolutions.

I make sure I look OK at 800x600, but I don't fret over it. The folks still using 800x600 can't afford my products anyway

Actually, the best method is to make your site fluid. This way no matter who visits your site the content will adjust to fit the screen. You can limit the expansion of the site so that all of your content on a very large monitor isn't in a 2 inch box spread across the screen.

Remember, CSS is your friend. =)

forget about 800x600. In the three big companies I've worked for, as well as all of my personal sites, over 95% of visitors have higher than an 800x600 site. If you think about it, all new computers come with at least a 17" lcd right? 1024x768 is the minimum resolution those things run at.

Just about every laptop built in the last few years has at least 1024 wide screen.

well, w3schools gives these stats:

Jan 2007

Higher = 26%
1024x768 = 54%
800x600 = 14%
640x480 = 0%
Unknown = 6%

so as you can see it's best to accommodate the majority. Keep in mind these stats are for 2007... and as each year passes less and less people use the low resolutions.

I think you would be safe using the higher resolutions but it really depends on your niche. For example a proxy that is going to be used on most schools' out-dated equipment I would make it smaller as the screens are likely 800x600. That is what most of the monitors are at my school. Also just to be safe, always put important navigation and advertisements on the left. If someone with a small screen views your large site, they may not even see the third column so put trivial, not very important things over there.

After years of designing at 780, after reviewing browser stats for my and my customers' sites, I have recently switched to 980.
