If you know a popular site that is looking for new content and you have relevant knowledge to share, then perhaps you can turn this to your advantage.

I've just had my first article published at SitePoint ( http://www.webmasterbase.com/article/710 ) and within 12 hours of publishing I saw more than 50 click throughs to my site from the single link that is featured in the bio. It might not seem like a lot, but at my current level of traffic it represents a significant proportion of my daily clickthroughs.

If you can get your own column on a popular site then you've got it made. So long as you can keep on writing fresh and relevent content, you'll be able to draw in traffic from wider social circles... who knows, you may even make new friends or even a worth while business relationships.

Good job, Tiggy! Been there, read it, and rated it.

Very good information for webmasters to think about. I would suggest that everyone read it and consider the costs of popularity!

Yea Tiggy, you have done a great job getting some of your articles on some very popular sites.

As well, you can sometimes get a lot of traffic when Google picks up these pages!

Watch out, you may just see my guide to hosting on SitePoint soon... the editor dropped by the other day and is interested in using it! SitePoint is the only network or site I've given permission to use the entire series, so if she breaks it up into several smaller articles then it might bide me some time to get a few more together for a more "steady" flow of traffic...

Now choosing a suitable host is a much "stronger" topic than avoiding a "beginners mistake" like miscalculating your hosting needs... here's hoping!

I think I'm getting into the swing of this article writing... yesterday I had an unusually high number of referrers coming from sites that I'd never even heard of. All the new referrers were coming in to the same article ( http://websiteowner.info/articles/pages/hotlinking.asp - incase you were wondering) and from password protected directories...

Curious as to what was going on I did some research and figured that I had been linked to WebHost Manager (some kind of control panel I hadn't heard of before). Today I'd learnt that WebHost Manager (the resellers backend to cPanel I believe) had upgraded to support Hotlink prevention, and happened to link back to my article on the subject (thanks to the boost in rankings I got for "hotlinking" on Google last time I updated!).

I got more than 100 unique visitors within the space of a day just for doing nothing more than usual! Just goes to prove that a well written article can get picked up by the most unlikely of people!

That extra boost of traffic is just what I wanted to fill in that little gap while I wait to see what SitePoint made of my hosting article - which is due out in the near future with any luck!

Wow Tiggy. You are getting very popular

Just don't get so busy that you leave us

You should see if my host will link to your article. www.wizardshosting.com

They just added hotlinking.asp protection also...

If they use cPanel alongside WebHost Manager then they probably already have! It's a syndicated news feed as far as I can tell.

Yeah I do a lot of writing. I write for a small pay doing product reviews. Most months I get enough to cover my ISP payment so I am not complaining.

I also write fiction and poetry. I have a few sites I am registered at where I post some of my writings.

All but on has a profile in which I can include a link to a website. Some have spaces for my site and then favorite sites so I usually put friends website links in there.

Plus I get exposure for later when my book is published. It's all good.

I really like to read, well, with as long as some of my posts are, I kinda' like to write too. But I'm very interested in reading more from the forum members.

So, Heidi, maybe you can put a sig in that has where we can read your "stuff". Be sure not to post affiliate links.

My curosity level is high, the ol' Inquiring minds want to know syndrome.

Thanks.

Heidi, please feel free to PM me and I'll do some reading.

Just a quick reminder to check out Tiggy's site for more artilces. Seems she's getting the hang of writing.

Maybe Tiggy will elaborate on how to view her new publications.

Thanks for the free publicity Dave it's not too difficult to find them as they are all at the site in my sig... even those not published on SitePoint yet... the "Human" one needs more work though, Georgina likes the idea of it but it still needs some work... not that anyone should be using it on their sites yet - I only posted the new articles yesterday.

I'm sure we'll be seeing more of Tiggy in the Webmaster-Talk newsletter. And maybe some other writers out there.
