How to display all files

Is there a way, a URL or something that you can input that gives you a directory listing for the site you are viewing? something that shows you a list of all the files on a site...
I put this into the Exclusive forum because its something i believe should be shared just amongst our members. It would be amazingly important to me if there was such a thing, for things such as viewing the web stats of competitors.
i guess this may seem a little sneeky, or alot sneeky, but it would deffinately help some of us to push our sites forward.
anyone who knows of a way, please post it here!

I don't think its possible to actually get a full list (apart from if there is a directory with no index file and directory viewing turned on), but if its stats you want, why not try:
www.domainname.com/webstats/
and
www.domainname.com/stats/
I know for a fact that some hosts (not naming them) don't password protect stats by default so.....

i've tried numerous different addresses to find the stats
/usage
/stat
/stats
/webstat
/webstats
/webalizer
/modlogan
all turned up blank, gave me a nice 404 error page. i'm sure i've seen it before, some way for you to list every file on the server (and please don't say use an FTP program). anyone with any ideas, let me know

You can not "see" the contents of a directory unless the server has been configured to allow it. Most servers use a list of default documents, and work through them until they can find something on that list that is available to display. If they can't find a file from the list, then they revert to their default behaviour - which will depend on the host. Any host interested in protecting their customers data and their servers from attack will disable directory listing... so short of using a script that can discover files, you are likely to have a hard time pulling a list of files from a server.
It would be like trying to pull out a healthy tooth! Near impossible.

Fonz, I think you missed the point of the question... he doesn't want to know how to see his own files (he could FTP in and print off a list if that were the case) - he wants to know how to snoop on someone elses Besides, just deleting your index files doesn't always solve the problem if the server doesn't allow a directory listing.

firstly, hey guys, i'm back!! not been around for a couple of weeks on account of illness. but, almost back to full health (i hope!) i should start appearing a little more now
you're right tiggy, i was hoping for a way to list the contents of SOMEONE ELSE'S directory, hoping to get a sneaky look at their webstats. Is there not a script of some kind where you could input the URL of a page, and it would scan the directory in which it was located and identify all the other pages therein?
this would be most useful...to me, and i'm sure anyone else. any scripters out there that want to have a go? PM me or something
thankx guys

I suppose in theory a script could do that, but as far as I know the only way would be for it to try every single combination of page/directory names and report back to you the ones which were correct (much like trying to hack a password). The problem with this is that it would be so resource intensive that it would be expensive and time-consuing for you to do and also the person you were 'investigating' would see so many error 404s that they would probably ban your IP address from their site.

guess so dave, i guess the script would have to try all the filenames AND extensions, so it would run into millions and billions of pages before it came up with a total listing...very time consuming
nice idea though...maybe someone could look into a way of making it happen better and faster / easier?

Well if someone tried to force open a directory like that I would ban them from my site! Seriousily, that would inflate the log files something rotten and your attack would stand out like a sore thumb!
Not to mention that an Apache module has been developed to stop any robots from being too naughty... take a look at http://www.robotcop.org to see what's been happening.

1k as in 1000 hits a month? thats really not that good ghetto. hits is the no. of files downloaded from his server, not the no. of visitors.
viewing all files i'm not bothered about, its tracking down the webstats that i'm concerned with. it would be very useful to know how my competitors are doing in relation to me. i've tried all the common names (see the ones i've tried above), but still no joy. my own stats on safariquip are p/wded, so no one can see them, but hey, if they don't pwd theirs, then maybe i can see them? any ideas anyone?

Don't forget, not everyone has statistics packages installed on their servers - I download my logs from a folder that is only accessible via FTP and compile them offline, so only I have the best picture of how my site is doing. Other site owners can "go fish" as it were...
Face facts, if you've tried all things you can think of to find the stats then they either aren't compiled in real time or you'll have to do even more homework to find where it is...
