You can pay people to set up your page or what not. Or you can learn on your own. There are many areas you can go to get free info, scripts, layouts, forums etc. Just take the time to learn how to use them and build them up. There are also places you can get free domain names. I just picked up 5 .info's from a company for free.

Well, I did not however start from the whole "webmaster thing".
I was 11. To say oddly O_o
I was on this virtual pet site called neopets. We had clubs and guilds, people made layouts and on boards it linked to graphic sites etc. I started to admire and get into this whole thing and bought psp 8. Then a year later I quit the site and somehow, I can't remember I started to get into web designing and etc etc etc..

Now even years later, im still learning..

Yeah you can't really tell how or when you start to get into web or other majors. Like me, I skipped two majors before I took web design class. I feel like it was a waste of time, but actually am learning pretty quick now.

I got interested in web design when I just started getting curious about how all those cool sites were created. I figured it was just HTML, until I found PHP and Javascript. It's not something you learn overnight, but it's worth it.

I agree, it does take time to learn and get to know how everything works. You might hit your head on the wall some days or go nuts. But after all of the time you spent it pays off.

My brother in law showed me this page he had made and put online, man this must be like 1995 or so now. My mind almost exploded with the concept you could do something and put it online for others to see. I bought Frontpage and started reading/learning through it. I bought a couple books. I then bumped up to Dreamweaver, went through all the tutorials a couple times, and started hitting all the intenet sites with tutorials/forums. A lot of the learning was noodling around with the different commands and just trying stuff. I also bought a couple of the books over at SitePoint.

I always wanted a website for some reason. Not for money just to have one to show friends etc. I finally after being told about it by a friend signed up for an angelfire page. I had a personal site and a site that I wrote reviews of all of the video games I owned. On my personal page I put a scrolling div with a bg image. It was a premade code that was made for a neopets page ( they were the days ) but it worked on my page. I was looking at the code and thought hmmm.... This actually makes sense. So I started playing with the codes and learned some html from a book I bought. Then I started using css ( mostly modifying premade codes ). Somewhere along the line I was having fun with it and decided to learn css and start getting serious about designing.

I started from there and kept going to where I am now. I think we should have another topic or in this one a list of milestones that are funny to us now but completely serious to us back then. Mine would have to be when I found the code to make links highlight when you mouseover them LMAO. Ah, the times.

ewharhar- I got interested in designing by neopets too
ruhere2- Could you share more info about those free domains?
manger- Myspace / xanga etc. are not a place I would reccomend you learn. I can make what are in my opinion good quality designs but I can barely even start to edit my myspace. Your best bet is go to like topcities and start hand coding html and in no time you will be learning more and more.

Good luck

Neopets got me started with web design too lol.

I started to learn over at http://www.pagetutor.com/. I played around with html for a while then got a book on css. I learnt most of what I know by simply trying it out. I started learning about accessibility at http://diveintoaccessibility.org/.

I have used http://www.w3schools.com/ for reference as it's easy to check up on an individual tag. I also found http://www.htmldog.com/ really good and simple to follow.

I have read the w3c specifications for html, css and accessibility as well although I don't recommend that as it's largely giberish unfortunately.

Now I'm learning php, I'm finding it quite hard to follow, but I'm sure if I dived in and tried writing some scripts I would get the hang of it much faster. I really should stop randomly browsing and get on with learning some more...

http://www.w3schools.com is a favorite of mine. I always liked spoono too.

I also should spend less time on forums and browsing around and more time learning php as well. I started doing some small scripts and includes and such for my site but I need to start learning more.

I created a site with freewebs to collect donations for sunami in 2004. Nobody donated, well actually nobody came to the site...
Then looking for a way to add a search feature to my 3 page site, I accidentally got introduced to javascript and HTML. (Mine was built using a page wizard kind of thing freewebs has.)
Started with pagetutor.com, which I still think is the best html tutorial on net. Takes you step by step.
Now safely coding in php and ajax.
