I am a new web designer. I have created a site using dreamweaver that has a banner on the top and a table bellow it. The table is broken into 2 columns and I have merged the cells in one column for content and used the left column for a button bar. I set the size of the cells with buttons in them to a specific width and height. I also added a few cells on the bottom for growth that do not have the dimensions entered. This is saved as a template.

The problem is when I enter information into the content area, the cells on the left do not keep their height. This only happens with Internet Explorer not other browsers. The site will be viewed mostly using IE though. Is there anything I can do?

And that is part of the problem with using tables for layout. Tables STRETCH with the content you put in them. Dump the tables for layout, come to the light of CSS for layout and you'll be on a better road going forward.

I think I know exactally what is wrong. Let me make sure I am understanding you correctly. You have 1 table with 2 columns. The left is used for the menu bar with buttons, and the right for content.

When you add alot of content the buttons dont stay at the top on the left column they stretch down the page correct?

If this is the problem you need to open up dreamweaver and select the column with the buttons, and then down on the left it will say Horz and Vert Postion, make sure the Vertical Postion is set to TOP, that way the buttons will stay at the top, the rest of the column will stretch to meet your content table.

I checked the alignment and made sure it was set to TOP, but that didn't work. The problem is that the left column is broken up into about 9 cells with the first 7 containing buttons. The other web browsers will stretch the bottom 1 or 2 cells and leave the top ones at the right size. IE will stretch all the cells equally, even though I have a set dimension.

I am not familiar with how to use CSS. Where is the best reference on how to use it? Thanks.
