Facebook itself is closed source, but they offer an API which allows you to tie your own applications into Facebook services such as the user system.
You can't download Facebook back-end code, just like you can't get Google back-end code, but the API's allow you to access come things.
They use API's that require user keys so that they can trace who's doing what, meaning they have more power to stop people from misusing their software.
