Open new page in same window from image map

This is probably easy but I can't find info on it. I was admiring a photographers website recently. The main page consisted of a bank of thumbnails on the right and dependant upon which one was clicked the corresponding large image opened on the left of the page. Looking at the source code the thumbnails had been made as one large image and mapped for hotspots. The large image associated with each hotspot was actually a webpage. It did not however have any title ro anything to identify it as a webpage so it looked in essence a photographic image. It also appeared that the image was "anchored" to appear at the same co-ordinates every time to avoid obscuring the thumbnails. How is all this done? I'm not wanting to copy the guy's website but the technique could have applications on my own site redevelopment.

I've looked at the Lightbox 2 and it's good. However it's not exactly what I'm looking for, it's on the lines of simple viewer et al. The site I am referring to is http://www.angryskies.co.uk. A look at the way it operates is a better description than I can give.

It looks a great deal to me like they are all separate webpages, just well set out to look like it is only the image changing.
The site has some accessibility issues you should watch out for.

They are separate webpages, I'm just trying to figure out how he gets them to open in a particular location on the screen and without headers etc. Interesting the accessibility issues you mention. I'm keen to learn, what are they?

If you use a lower resolution and scroll down to click the images, you will notice the page actually reloads. These are simply their own page for each image.

Photoshop has some automated photo gallery's that could very easily be customized to look smiler tho that.

Interesting. In an ideal world I would learn how to code it by hand but I just don't have the time at the moment what with one thing and another.
So i take it the general consensus on this site is not a positive one in terms of design/approach?
