Recently we created a sub-domain of our website and I was told to do 301 redirect. What's 301 redirect? What's the function?

A HTTP 301 response code is one that is made by a server in response to a HTTP request by a user agent for a URI that has moved to a new location.

301 Redirect is a form of URL which allows the users and visitors of website moved from the current URL to the different address. It is basically defined as 301 redirection.

Nope! It is nothing to do with a "type or URL"

A 301 Redirect advises the client and more importantly, the search engine, that the page has been moved or otherwise can be found under a different name or on a different part of the site, even a different site.

Beats being told "404 Page Not Found" and you're out of luck.

Copy the title of your post, "What is 301 Redirect," and paste it into Google. There are pages upon pages on the topic!

It all depends on your point of view. You visit someone else's web site, you want your browser redirected to where the information is -- that's more important than what a search engine does.

You own the web site, you not only want to see this visitor get to where the information is, you want the search engine driving people to that part of your web site that contains the requested information.

I guess I was drivin' at the fact that you gain by properly using 301 redirects on your web site to satisfy both needs. You gave a good brief technical answer, I just expanded on it perhaps in a more layman set of terms.

Now if I can figure where my spell checker went and why this web site came up a blank page when I tried to reply to your post from my other computer, while it all works fine here, I'll be all set!

301 redirection is permanent redirection which we basically implement when one of our site or web page has permanently moved to some other location. It help us to retain the exiting traffic that is coming to the old web page or website.
