Hi everybody, my name is Mike and this is my first time posting. I am not a professional webmaster or web designer, but I do have my own website and I built it and change it around and always keep it fresh. I have my website with an Internet domain registrar and web hosting company and I won't mentioned there name at this time, But I'm sure you can imagine. I only have a 10 page website for about a hundred dollars a year. I know my website is small but it works well for me. Whenever I rebuild or change my website it is so terribly hard and slow to work with it drives me insane. Yesterday, I remove pictures and added new ones with some text and it took me more than 12 hours which normally if I was working with a good Internet domain registrar and web hosting company would only take me two hours.

My question is, is there another Internet domain registrar and web hosting company out there that is reasonably priced, I can be my own webmaster and most of all a lot faster to work with.

Thank you for your time from Mike, an amateur.

Nothing to do with the registration of the domain. Probably a oversold (overloaded) host server.

The information I am looking for is what hosting company to move too.
I don't want to switch hosting companies just to switch, I only want to switch to a faster hosting company.

I may not know a lot about hosting companies. They all might be bogged down as far as I know, but I thought I would check with you Pros first.

Looking forward to your reply Vikas

Hi Chrishirst: In your professional opinion, do you think I'm ok with my slow hosting company and I should stay with them, because of the fact they are all slow and overloaded.

Thanks Chrishirst

Mike there are tons of hosting companies. It's hard to tell you to pick a specific one. You'll find good and bad reviews on all of them. A good place to find reviews is Webhosting Talk. Lots of people here also offer hosting and you can look through the web hosting threads here to see if you want to work with anyone.

There are basically three types of hosting

Shared Hosting - your site gets a small piece of the server along with hundreds of other sites. What Chris was saying by the server being oversold is that most hosts will offer you much more space and bandwidth than they know you'll need. They oversell the server in that if everyone used what they're entitled to it would be more than 100% of the server capacity.

A little bit of overselling is fine and normal, but sometimes the server gets oversold too much and too many sites are using more of the resources than expected. That's probably what's happening with your site.

VPS (Virtual Private Server) - Your site is also on the same computer as other sites, but not as many and it's been set up so you have your own server on that computer.

Dedicated Hosting - The computer and server are all yours

Dedicated and VPS cost more than shared hosting. You can expect to spend anywhere from $5 - $20 for decent shared hosting. Like a lot of things cheaper isn't always better, just cheaper. And the most expensive hosting isn't necessarily the best.

Sometimes the difference in who you should choose comes down to support. You might want to make a list of a few possible hosts you're considering and send each an email or give a call. If they don't treat you to well before you're a customer they probably won't give you good support once you are a customer.

Thanks Vangogh, This answers my question. I'll put your reply to work as I have some options now including staying where I'm at.
Thanks

I use QTH.com as my registrar for a couple domain names. Good service with unhosted domains, and I use their email hosting service woth one of my domains. They also offer webhosting which I have not used.

I host my other domain with Surpasshosting.com. I found it cheaper to keep my domain name with QTH than to switch its registrar to be with SurpassHosting.

I have had good success with SurpassHosting.com's Power package for webhosting. it is shared hosting, there are around 50 other web sites on the server, according to a reverse lookup on my IP address.

Their support staff has always been very courteous and helpful, and they cost me $60 per year.

I get an Apache server, cgi, php, server-side includes and MySQL, along with a cPanel control panel, and upon request, secure FTP and command line access with jailed ssh.

The site goes down once in a great while, but a support ticket calls their attention and they restore the server within a short time.

Hope this is useful to you.
