i am planning to create a server to allow more than a million people to get access to our website without crashing it.
this is like a school project, where we assume that we are creating a company with certain budget.

but my question is, lets say,
Clovertown - Quad Core Dual Intel Clovertown Quad Core Processors 8 x 300GB, 10K RPM SCSI/SAS Hard Drive & 2 x 73GB 15k RPM SCSI/SAS 8192 MB RAM for $1,099.00

or i am not so sure how big and expensive server i would need,,,
please recommand me a site of reliable source,,,,
or even give me some idea on how good the computer has to be...

A million people... per day? per hour? concurrently?

It would also depend on the type of website. Would this be a database driven website, such as a forum? Or just static pages?

Sorry if I'm not being useful, but more information is needed, as these factors affect the answer drastically.

I would not go out and get the server just yet, unless you are going to have the numbers immediately.

Also regardless of how many people more information is going to be needed on what you are running because specfically all it takes is 1 hit on a poorly written application to cause a server to become unstable.

I agree with the top 2... It all depends on the factors Spizz mentioned...
is the site graphic intense? just text?
