hi,

im noticing a steady growth on my image comment site and seem to be getting close to my bandwidth limit on my virtual server. my question goes out to those who run similar sites...

do you just keep upgrading to meet your demand? virtual or dedicated? Do you even out on cost of server/revenue?

any help would be appreciated :]

I currently have a virtual box over at Webair.com

My traffic is probably at 2k uniques day (not alot) but my bandwidth is about 40gb/day and growing by a couple gb each day.

One thing to do is make sure that nobody is leeching off the pictures posted to your site - so disable hotlinking.

It is not uncommon for many people to leech off such sites and that can easily account for multiple GB per day as the site gains popularity. Obviously you can offset any leeching by requesting a donation from sites that use it a lot to help offset hosting costs.

The other thing is to enforce limits - so people can host 10 pictures free or a set size limit free, but to host more they would need to pay a small amount per month ($5 for every x storage or every x amount of pictures etc) - if enough people subscribed it can easily offset any bandwidth increases.

If you're using that much and growing you need to look into unmetered dedicated hosting....if you can afford.

And yeah look into what's actually using all that bandwidth, there is no way those 2000 visitors are doing it.

hmmm...

the kind of site i run though, is like a myspace image comment site..

so these images are being distributed and posted over and over again. So the bandwidth does seem right..

i was able to switch to a dedicated for about 150/month

w/ a limit of 3mbps, im just having a hard time figuring out how to calculate how much mbps im using so I know if im reaching my limit.

how do you guys w/ heavy bandwidth sites measure this? thanks :]
