Dedicated server costs?

After reading a bunch of threads here it seems dedicated server prices are all over the place. I've seen $100-400+

I run about 10 sites and one is a vbulletin forum and 2 are ecommerce sites. I want to move to a dedicated (managed) server but didn't want to spend $200+/mnth.

Since it is only 10 sites, I don't think I need a ton of horsepower but do need about 1GB ram since many are database driven.

Is it possible to get this for this price with decent support?

Thoughts?

You can definitely spend less than $200/month and get plenty of horsepower for your needs. Check out the "Last Minute Offers" at the bottom of iweb.ca/en/index.php?page=dedie ... You can get a P4 server with 1 GB memory for as little as $89/month.

Search WebHostingTalk.com for iWeb and you'll see that they have an excellent reputation.

But like most dedicated servers, these systems are not "managed" like shared hosting accounts are...it's up to you to do all the system administration. If you're uncomfortable with that, then you can outsource the sysadmin to someone else for a little bit more.

I use 800Hosting.com for a couple of my boxes. To be honest, support and sales wise, they are not good, but their pricing is great is you can get them on a sale.

May be you can consider using a VPS that cut down the hosting price for you but still can have a plenty of horsepower?

I use hostmysite.com and rackspace. Neither are cheap, but the longer I'm in this business, the more it becomes clear to me that you truely do get what you pay for.

^^ I totally agree. You do get what you pay for.

Make sure you get GREAT hardware and at least 2Gigs of memory. Having a secondary backup drive will help with emergencies. Get a good control panel that will make it easy to add sites and manage them.

Are you limiting yourself to 10 sites? Do you think you'll have more in the future? Dedicated means dedicated space and bandwidth....no sharing with others like a VPS. Check out webhostingtalk.com to read reviews before you make a decision like this. You'll wish you paid more for a better server and support when your sites go down and no one is there to help...

There are plenty of new scalable hosting platforms, which provide the performance of a dedicated server or a number of dedicated servers for a fraction of the cost. Look into grid hosting, utility computing and things of that nature.
