Which would you choose if you're transfering your sites from another host? which are better in general? a comparsion between the two and their pros and cons would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

I really like DreamHost, I've been with them for nearly a year now and they have excellent support, lots of bandwidth and disk space and they are very cheap. Just recently they dectupled their disk space and doubled their bandwidth so for $7.95 you can get 200GB disk space and 2000GB bandwidth.

You can use the promo code 5000OFF to save $50.00 off of your initial payment so you can have one year of hosting for only $69.40 which is extremely good.

The only thing which is "different" about them is that they use their own control panel software. It takes some time to get used to it, but once that time passes, it is really great and easy to use.

$100 - $999 Monthly

I have been using dreamhost for about 6 months or so now.
I wasn't expecting a lot when i signed up, i used a coupon code freely available on the net and only ended up paying about $9 for a whole year.
Considering you get one free domain registration included with that, you get a domain and a stupidly large amount of space and bandwidth for what it generally costs to buy a new domain.
It sounded too good to be true, and i wasn't sure what to expect. For the first few months it was flawless and i didn't have any problems.
Then suddenly it all went to pieces, during the daytime my sites simply wouldn't load. It wasn't due to server load that never really went over about 5 at peak times, it just seemed that their network couldn't cope. At all.
This went on for quite some time, but the dreamhost staff did seem to be trying everything they could and a lot of the continuation looked like it was simply down to bad luck.
They are very open about their issues though, pretty detailed reports of their happenings can be found at dreamhoststatus.com
Things have been fixed for a few weeks now though and i haven't had any more problems, they have just gone mad and increased their packages by a crazy amount and upgraded existing customers too like Lucas said.
Overall, for the price you pay they offer an amazing deal. They have had their problems but they have all eventually been sorted out, they have been in the business a long time too.
Oh, another issue i've seen a few people complain about is the restricted PHP version that is in place by default, however you can compile your own PHP install to get around any problems you might have with theirs.

I currently use Bluehost... They work out pretty well. At one point, they had some server issues, but that seems to be a rarity.

I've never used Dreamhost though, would like to give them a try.

I do not recommend Bluehost.

Sure the price is great, the space and bandwith as well.
But they have major issues! I have had months that my websites were unreachable during peak hours. Not only that but also during normal hours.

I am now looking for a dedicated server beacuse i am sick and tired of this company.

Thanks for all the comments, very much appreciated guys! =)

Ok, i'm about to go with DreamHost, but switching to a different CP other than "cPanel X" is making me hesitate. Would switching from "cPanel X" to DreamHost's control panel be complicated? i'm a total noob with servers.

In what way is the PHP version restricted? By limiting the ways you can interact with the server, for example?

A colleague of mine is looking for a host that offers a lot of bandwidth cheaply, however his PHP script does a lot of things like image resizing, host lookups and moving uploaded files about the different directories

DreamHost allows all that. They have the GD Library with both read and create for GIF files, Zend Optimizer amongst other things.

Not sure about DreamHost, but with BlueHost you can get ssh shell access, which is very nice. I also have a dedicated server with Server Beach, got a bluehost account basically because it was cheaper than using ftpbackup from Server Beach. So I backup the sites on my dedicated box to bluehost and I also host a few low traffic sites on it. No complaints so far.
