So is it true that Proxy sites use a lot more bandwidth than regular sites? and why?

Also, how do you exactly build a proxy site, is it some kind of script you buy/get somewhere?

Thanks,
A.H

Yes, proxy sites use a lot more bandwidth because they have to fetch the content (including images and flash files) from other sites and display them to the user.

There are many free proxy site scripts which you can get. Just do a Google search. There should even be a few on SourceForge

Thanks for the answer Lucas.

So how much would a proxy site that gets 1500 unique's/day use?

I believe that it would depend on what the 1500 users use it for.

It would.

I would be more worried about processor power required.

Well it really does depends!

Say for example 1500 users all use your site to view YouTube, you are looking at a huge bandwidth figure because it has to transfer all the videos. Or maybe Flickr - people looking at large images etc.

So if you imagine that each of those users transfer 50 meg a day in videos and images as a worst case, you're looking at 150gig transfer a day - 75 for your server to fetch the data, and another 75 to send it to the client.

And there is nothing to say that they wont download more than 50 meg a day each. It could be 0.1, 10 100, 200, 500meg a day!! It really really really depends on what they use it for - there is no way to forcast it really.

you can configure some proxies to disallow requests of files over a certain amount of kilobytes.

My website www.schoolsurf.org using CGIProxy rarely uses any bandwidth. I have yet to figure out why. Maybe someone here can answer my question. I received about 10k uniques in the month according to webalizer...And that only used about 200mb of bandwidth.. Im not sure why its using barely any bandwidth

Being used to download porn? :-P

My proxy recieves between 2.5 and 3k uniques a day and I'm actually not sure how much bandwidth it's using a day, but September total was around 70 gigs I think. I really don't check as long as I'm well within bandwidth limits.

I run about 40 proxies at any given time. Our biggest, Proxy.tl, gets about 8K uniques per day and uses over 10 gigs per day in bandwidth.
